Joelinton Defends Teammate Miley Amid Criticism
Joelinton expressed concern over the criticism directed at Newcastle United teammate Lewis Miley following a significant milestone, but he believes that true supporters are firmly behind the young player.
Miley decided to limit the replies to a post he made on X, celebrating his 50th first-team appearance for Newcastle over the weekend. This decision was reportedly made as a precaution, considering his young age.
The 19-year-old delivered a commendable performance during the goalless draw against Bournemouth, marking his first Premier League start since February. However, he faced backlash from a small group of social media users who questioned his suitability for the first team.
His cautious approach on social media caught the attention of fans, who subsequently sent messages of support. Team captain Bruno Guimaraes praised Miley, referring to him as a “top player and guy.”
Joelinton, who played alongside Miley in Newcastle's 4-1 victory against Bradford City on Wednesday, remarked that the young midfielder has a “great future ahead of him.”
“It’s always tough to see your teammate receive criticism,” Joelinton stated after the Carabao Cup third-round match. “I’ve had my own challenges here, so I understand how it feels.”
“I know the fans are behind the team and recognize a truly talented young player. He performed excellently on Sunday. The team must improve, and everyone should reflect and strive for better.”
Miley expressed gratitude for Newcastle's “amazing” traveling support in his Sunday post, stating he was “very proud” to reach this milestone with his boyhood club.
During a breakout season at Newcastle two years ago, Miley set several records, including becoming the youngest player in Champions League history to assist an English side at just 17 years and 226 days old.
Despite facing back and foot injuries and stiff competition for a starting position from fellow midfielders Guimaraes, Joelinton, and Sandro Tonali, Miley notably retained his spot in Eddie Howe's starting lineup for the match against Bradford.
“I thought Lewie was excellent,” commented Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe. “He played a significant role in the first half, demonstrating lovely touches and short passes into midfield, using Joe and Bruno to help control that area.”
“He’s come back into the team and delivered two impressive performances in a row. I thought he was really good against Bournemouth in a different way than tonight, but he’s continually developing his experience, and I’m very pleased with him.”
