Wales head coach Craig Bellamy has expressed confidence in Aaron Ramsey's international future, despite leaving the midfielder out of his latest squad. He believes Ramsey deserves a statue in his honor upon retirement.
Ramsey, 34, was not included in the squad for Thursday's World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan and the subsequent friendly against Canada next Tuesday. Bellamy cited Ramsey's lack of match fitness as the reason for this mutual decision, as the player has only made one substitute appearance since March.
This appearance came earlier this month when he debuted for his new club, Pumas UNAM, following a hamstring injury sustained while playing for Cardiff City last season.
Despite his exclusion, Ramsey has expressed his ambition to participate in the 2026 World Cup, and Bellamy sees a potential role for the former Arsenal star in his future plans. "He’s been around for a while and he still has football left in him. This move might even rejuvenate him; we’ll see. He’s available, and it’s impossible not to consider him," said Bellamy.
Bellamy emphasized the importance of allowing players to determine their own careers, stating, "We are quick to suggest retirement, but that’s not our place. When Ramsey decides it’s time, then we can talk about a statue in his honor. He has been an incredible player, and his presence elevates the team. Even at 50% of his best, he inspires confidence in others."
Having played alongside Ramsey for Wales and Cardiff before coaching him, Bellamy has consistently praised his contributions both on and off the field. He maintained Ramsey as captain following his appointment as head coach in July 2024, recognizing the value he brings to the team dynamic.
Addressing concerns that playing in Mexico might hinder Ramsey's international prospects, Bellamy stated, "If he’s fit and able to play the way we want, he’ll be included. If not, he knows it’s not an opportunity. But if he’s in condition, I recall how impactful he was in my first match against Turkey, where he played as a false nine and delivered exceptional passes for our forwards."
With the upcoming World Cup set to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Bellamy hopes Ramsey can provide valuable insight into the playing conditions if Wales qualifies. "I spoke with him before his move to Pumas and was excited for him. My main concern, not just for athletes but for everyone, is to be happy. If you’re not ready to retire, continue playing as long as you enjoy it. His family is happy with the move, and it’s a great experience. Who wouldn’t want to live in Mexico for a year?"
Bellamy also noted the potential challenges of playing at altitude and the benefits of training at lower elevations, saying, "If we end up playing in Mexico, having Ramsey’s experience will be invaluable. He can share everything he learns."
