Kilmarnock's Stuart Kettlewell Gains Support After First League Win
Stuart Kettlewell faced skepticism from some Kilmarnock fans upon his appointment at the end of May, with many describing the decision as "underwhelming." However, just four months later, those same fans were chanting his name after the team's first league victory of the season at Tannadice.
On the surface, Kettlewell's journey to this point may seem surprising. It took him six matches to secure his first win in the Scottish Premiership, and his team was eliminated from the Premier Sports Cup in the quarter-finals. Yet, this does not capture the full picture.
Fans have expressed appreciation for Kettlewell's approach during his 12 games in charge. They have noted a clear style of play, the emergence of youth players, and the smooth integration of new signings.
With a league record of one win, one loss, and four draws, Kilmarnock is showing signs of progress, and the 2-0 victory over Dundee United could mark the beginning of a positive trend.
'Terrible Appointment' or 'Perfectly Happy'?
The reaction to Kettlewell's appointment was divided. Fans who reached out to BBC Sport Scotland shared a range of opinions, but the responses were far from unanimous.
Martin: "Terrible appointment, failed at County and left Motherwell before he was fired. The board is ignoring protests from fans (90% against) and fell for his 'word soup.' We're in for a relegation battle. I regret renewing my season ticket."
Davey: "Perfectly happy. He knows the Scottish game and has a reputation for developing young players. Some will complain; it wouldn’t matter who was appointed."
Peter: "Kettlewell is the cheap option."
Some fans viewed the appointment as a sign of the board's lack of ambition, while others urged supporters to rally behind him regardless of their initial opinions.
While Martin's critique may have been overly harsh, it is worth noting that Kettlewell, alongside co-manager Steven Ferguson, had previously helped lift County up the league table. His departure from Motherwell was unexpected and stemmed from personal abuse he received from fans.
Kilmarnock Finally Reaps 'Just Rewards'
If Kettlewell felt the weight of initial skepticism, he did not let it affect his performance. After forgoing his honeymoon for a training trip to the Netherlands with his squad, Kilmarnock quickly made an impact in the League Cup.
A solid victory over Brora Rangers was followed by a hard-fought win against Livingston. Although a penalty shootout loss to Kelty Hearts was a setback, a win against East Fife ensured their progression to the second round.
The league campaign was less straightforward, with four draws leading to frustration. However, Kettlewell expressed satisfaction with the team's performance, stating that he would have "bitten your hand off" for such a start to the season after their second-round win over United.
The only defeat so far in 90 minutes came against Celtic, thanks to a contentious last-minute penalty. Following the victory at Tannadice, Kettlewell reflected, "We weren't far off where we wanted to be in previous games. We executed the game plan well against St Mirren and Celtic. We faced two tough blows with penalties, which can lead to negativity. But the performances have been good, and today we received our just rewards. This win has boosted the players' confidence and belief. The consistency we've shown has been excellent."
What Changes Has Kettlewell Implemented?
Kettlewell's attacking yet pragmatic style of play has garnered praise. He has been consistent with his team selections, featuring a solid back three of George Stanger, Lewis Mayo, and Robbie Deas.
Wing-backs Jamie Brandon and young talent Ben Brannan were instrumental before injuries sidelined them. Up front, newcomers Marcus Dackers and Djenairo Daniels have formed a strong partnership.
The standout performer has been David Watson, who was often benched under former manager Derek McInnes but has flourished under Kettlewell's guidance.
Watson expressed appreciation for Kettlewell's support, stating, "He’s been helpful not just for me but for other young lads. He’s been brilliant, and there are young players training every day, creating opportunities for academy talents."
Fans desire not only victories but also an engaging style of play and the promotion of young players. So far, Kettlewell is meeting these expectations. He has even begun to improve the team's away form, as Kilmarnock secured their first away league win in 15 matches at Tannadice.
While it is still early in the season, the signs of improvement are encouraging. If the team maintains their performance levels, positive results are likely to follow.
