Lamine Yamal's Injury Raises Concerns Amid Spain's Player Management
Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal is uncertain for the upcoming Champions League match against Newcastle United, and his manager Hansi Flick has expressed concerns about the treatment of the 18-year-old by the Spanish national team.
Yamal featured for Spain during recent international fixtures, contributing to a 3-0 victory over Bulgaria and a 6-0 win against Turkey.
However, he missed Barcelona's first-team training on Saturday due to a groin injury and has been ruled out of Sunday's league match against Valencia, ahead of the crucial encounter with Newcastle on Thursday.
"Lamine will not be available for the match against Valencia—it's unfortunate," Flick stated. "He played for the national team despite experiencing pain. He struggled during the games, playing 79 and 73 minutes respectively, and did not train in between due to this discomfort. This is not proper player care, is it?"
Flick continued, "Spain has the best team and players in the world, excelling in every position. It would be beneficial for them to take better care of our young talents. I am truly saddened by this situation."
Barcelona's press officer later confirmed that Yamal is experiencing "discomfort in his pubic bone" and is doubtful for the match against Newcastle.
Flick, who previously served as Germany's national team manager, mentioned that he had reached out to Spain's coach Luis de la Fuente via text, but acknowledged that there is room for improvement in their communication.
"Having been in that position myself, I understand how challenging it can be," Flick added. "I have only communicated with him through text, as my Spanish is limited and his English is not strong, which may pose a communication barrier. Ultimately, given that we have multiple players involved, better communication would be beneficial."
No Date for Nou Camp Reopening
Barcelona will host Valencia at their 6,000-capacity Johan Cruyff training ground, as redevelopment work at the Nou Camp remains unfinished.
The La Liga champions have been playing at the Olympic Stadium in Montjuic for the past two seasons.
Barcelona has stated that they are "working intensively to obtain the necessary administrative permits for the opening" of the Nou Camp "in the coming weeks," although a specific reopening date has yet to be confirmed.
Flick remarked, "I spoke with the players and the captains, and they assured me it will not affect our performance. Playing at the new Camp Nou, with a capacity of 105,000, may present a different atmosphere compared to the Johan. However, as I previously mentioned, it is not an excuse; Valencia will also have to adapt to this venue."
