Liverpool Faces Leadership Crisis Amid Struggles
Defending champions Liverpool are facing significant challenges this season due to a lack of leadership, according to former England striker Wayne Rooney.
The Reds have lost four consecutive Premier League matches and currently sit in seventh place, trailing leaders Arsenal by seven points.
After suffering a 3-2 defeat to Brentford on Saturday, Liverpool's performance has raised concerns, following earlier losses to Crystal Palace, Chelsea, and Manchester United in a troubling start to the league campaign.
In the latest episode of The Wayne Rooney Show, the five-time Premier League winner highlighted the concerning body language of captain Virgil van Dijk and key forward Mohamed Salah during this difficult period for the team. "No one saw this coming; it has hit them quickly and hard, and they seem to be struggling to find a way out," he remarked.
Rooney emphasized the urgency for the manager and team leaders to address these issues promptly. "Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah have signed new contracts, but I don’t believe they have effectively led the team this season. Body language speaks volumes, and we are observing a noticeable shift in their demeanor. As the top two players, if their body language is off, it impacts the entire squad. If I were a Liverpool fan or the manager, this would be a significant concern for me," he added.
In contrast, Arsenal appears well-positioned to compete for the title for the first time since 2004, having finished as runners-up for the previous three seasons. Mikel Arteta's squad has secured victories in their last four league matches, including three consecutive clean sheets, culminating in a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday.
Rooney noted, "The squad is strong enough now, and they have gained valuable experience that has brought them close to success. I believe they are ready to win the title. If they fail to do so now, it could lead to a managerial change."
Meanwhile, Manchester United, Rooney's former club, is also on an upward trajectory after a 4-2 victory over Brighton, marking their third consecutive win and elevating them to sixth place, level on points with Manchester City and one point ahead of Liverpool.
A key factor in United's resurgence has been the performance of forward Bryan Mbeumo, who has netted three of his five goals in the last two matches. Rooney admitted he had initial doubts when United signed the 26-year-old Cameroon international for £65 million from Brentford this summer but now believes he is proving his worth. "His energy, work rate, and desire are essential qualities for a United player. While I had some reservations, I now see that he truly belongs at the club. His consistent performances indicate that if you regularly find yourself in the right positions and create chances, you can score 20 goals a season," Rooney concluded.
