Liverpool Manager Arne Slot Defends Summer Spending and Prepares for Isak's Debut
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has expressed his frustration with pundits who he believes show favoritism towards other clubs, particularly regarding comments about the club's summer spending as he prepares for Alexander Isak's debut.
The recent signing of Swedish striker Isak from Newcastle for a British record fee of £125 million has brought Liverpool's total summer expenditure to £450 million on eight players.
Isak is expected to make his first appearance for the Reds during their Champions League opener against Atletico Madrid at Anfield on Wednesday.
In a pre-match press conference, Slot highlighted that Liverpool's substantial spending was balanced by over £250 million earned from player sales, noting that the club had spent just £10 million the previous summer.
"There is so much focus on our new signings, especially from pundits who favor some other clubs and cannot stop discussing the £450 million," Slot stated. "I repeat, £450 million! But they overlook the nearly £300 million that we have generated from sales. Therefore, if we want to strengthen the squad, we need to invest that amount of money."
Slot believes that Liverpool has conducted excellent business, emphasizing that all eight of their new signings are 25 years old or younger, and he feels the club deserves recognition for its strategic approach.
"It is a compliment that people are highlighting our spending, as it indicates that the players we have brought in are considered to be of high quality," the Dutch manager explained. "While some teams prefer to sign 27-year-olds who are ready to contribute immediately, we have opted for younger players aged 21 and 22 who are also prepared to make an impact."
Isak did not participate in Liverpool's recent 1-0 victory over Burnley, the first match following his transfer, due to a lack of match fitness. The 25-year-old trained alone at his former club Newcastle to facilitate his move to Anfield and now requires additional work to reach peak fitness after missing the pre-season.
His only appearance this season was for Sweden, where he played 18 minutes off the bench in a 2-0 loss to Kosovo last week.
Slot confirmed that he is "100% sure" Isak will not play a full 90 minutes against Atletico but indicated that he will have a role in the match against the La Liga side.
"He is part of the squad, and it is an exciting Champions League game to look forward to. If people are eager to see his playing time, that could mean he will be involved tomorrow as well," Slot added. "Once he is fully fit, he will be able to play 90 minutes, and the next step will be playing three times a week for a full 90 minutes. The key challenge for him is to regain the fitness necessary to perform at the level he did last season, including scoring goals and making significant contributions in attack."
