Liverpool Secures Vital Champions League Win Against Inter Milan
Dominik Szoboszlai's late penalty secured a crucial victory for Liverpool against Inter Milan in the Champions League.
The match was overshadowed by the absence of Mohamed Salah, who was left out of the squad after expressing grievances about the club's handling of his situation and his deteriorating relationship with manager Arne Slot.
With Salah remaining in Liverpool, Szoboszlai took responsibility for the decisive penalty in the 88th minute, awarded after a video assistant referee (VAR) review determined that Alessandro Bastoni had pulled the shirt of Florian Wirtz in the penalty area.
Inter Milan goalkeeper Yann Sommer dove in the right direction but was unable to stop the powerful shot, allowing Liverpool to secure a much-needed three points following a tumultuous period for the club.
After a troubling stretch that included nine defeats in twelve matches, Slot's team has now gone four games unbeaten.
With this victory, Liverpool has accumulated 12 points from six Champions League matches, positioning them in the top eight of the league phase and ensuring automatic qualification for the knockout stage.
Conversely, Inter Milan fell to fifth place, sharing the same points total, and suffered their first home defeat in 19 matches in the competition.
Earlier in the match, Liverpool believed they had taken the lead in the 32nd minute when Ibrahima Konate scored from a corner. However, referee Felix Zwayer disallowed the goal after a lengthy VAR check, ruling that the ball had struck the arm of striker Hugo Ekitike before reaching Konate.
Curtis Jones, Szoboszlai, and Ekitike all tested Sommer in a first half that saw Inter lose both Piotr Zielinski and Yann Aurel Bisseck to injuries.
The disallowed goal seemed to energize the home side, with Nicolo Barella coming close with a free-kick that narrowly missed, and Lautaro Martinez's header being saved by Alisson Becker.
As the match appeared destined for a goalless draw—potentially a first under Slot's management—Wirtz, who came on for Alexander Isak in the 68th minute, capitalized on Bastoni's foul to set up Szoboszlai's winning penalty.
Szoboszlai's successful conversion ensured that Liverpool would leave the San Siro victorious for the fourth consecutive year.
