Manchester City Debut: James Trafford's Controversial Performance
Goalkeeper James Trafford experienced a challenging first half during his home debut for Manchester City against Tottenham at the Etihad Stadium.
Thomas Frank's Tottenham took a commanding two-goal lead into halftime, with goals from winger Brennan Johnson and midfielder Joao Palhinha.
Trafford, 22, was at fault for Spurs' second goal, as he lost possession in his own box, allowing Pape Matar Sarr to intercept before Palhinha found the net.
There was widespread sentiment that the England U21 goalkeeper was fortunate to remain on the pitch at that moment.
Shortly after Spurs opened the scoring, Trafford rushed out of his area as winger Mohammed Kudus approached the goal. After Kudus controlled the ball with his chest, Trafford seemed to handle it outside the 18-yard box and collided with the Ghanaian, kneeing him in the chest.
Kudus lay injured on the pitch while Manchester City regained possession, yet a free-kick was not awarded to Tottenham, and Trafford faced no disciplinary action.
While the challenge on Kudus sparked debate, it was Trafford's use of his arm outside the box that led many to question whether he should have been sent off.
Why Wasn’t Trafford Punished?
Initially, the referee did not deem any foul on the field, and thus the incident was not reviewed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
Although all incidents are examined in the VAR room, only those considered worthy of intervention are reviewed by the on-field referee. BBC Sport understands that the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), the body overseeing Premier League officiating, believed there was no basis for VAR intervention, citing Trafford’s hands being at his side and the proximity of his body to the incident.
Moreover, a goalkeeper handling the ball outside the box does not automatically result in a red card. Several factors must be considered by the referee or VAR, including whether the goalkeeper denied an obvious goalscoring opportunity, the distance from the offense to the goal, the direction of play, and the presence and positioning of defenders near the incident.
