Manchester City Dominates Borussia Dortmund in Champions League
Phil Foden scored twice and Erling Haaland found the net against his former club as Manchester City defeated Borussia Dortmund, solidifying their position in the Champions League group stage.
Pep Guardiola's team remains unbeaten in their first four matches, with this victory propelling them to fourth place in the standings. The top eight teams will qualify automatically for the knockout stage.
Nico Kovac's Dortmund began the match energetically but lost momentum as the hosts scored twice in a span of seven minutes during the first half.
Foden was a standout performer, testing Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel with a powerful long-range shot before sending a curling free-kick directly into his hands.
In the 22nd minute, Foden broke the deadlock, receiving the ball outside the box and, with the Dortmund defenders backing off, he delivered a precise finish into the bottom corner. This marked his first Champions League goal in a year, following a score in a 4-1 defeat to Sporting last season.
City continued to apply pressure, with Kobel saving a close-range attempt from Nico O'Reilly before Haaland scored in the 29th minute, converting a cutback from Jeremy Doku. This was Haaland's fifth consecutive Champions League goal, making him the first player to achieve this feat with three different clubs: RB Salzburg, Dortmund, and now Manchester City.
Kobel was kept busy, deflecting a powerful strike from Tijjani Reijnders. After halftime, City maintained their dominance, and Foden added his second goal in the 57th minute with another exquisite finish.
Dortmund, currently sitting 14th in the league, managed a late consolation goal when Waldemar Anton scored from a Julian Ryerson cross. However, substitute Rayan Cherki restored City's three-goal lead in injury time with a skillful run and finish.
Man City Analysis: Foden Shines as Haaland Makes History
After a challenging start to the season, with two losses in their first three matches, City has found their rhythm, recording just one defeat in their last 13 games, including a decisive victory over Dortmund on Wednesday.
The match commenced with a spectacular light show at the Etihad Stadium, and the players delivered a dazzling performance, bringing their points total to 10.
Despite an early exit in last season's playoff round, City's home record in the group stage is formidable, extending to 23 unbeaten matches over the past seven years.
Foden had a couple of attempts before scoring a stunning opener and followed it up with another classy goal in the second half, marking his fourth goal of the season.
By that point, the game was already out of Dortmund's reach, as a rampant Haaland scored with a first-time finish. This brought his tally to 27 goals for club and country in what is shaping up to be an extraordinary season for the striker as he leads City's charge in all competitions.
Haaland continues to break records, scoring in five consecutive Champions League matches for three different clubs, following his time with RB Salzburg and Dortmund.
City will also be encouraged by Cherki's impactful late performance, as the Frenchman scored his third goal of the season after providing two assists for Haaland in the recent win over Bournemouth.
