Manchester United's Interim Coach Darren Fletcher to Lead FA Cup Tie Against Brighton
Darren Fletcher has confirmed that he will continue as Manchester United's interim coach for the FA Cup third-round match against Brighton at Old Trafford this Sunday.
However, the recent 2-2 draw with Burnley at Turf Moor highlighted that the challenges facing United cannot be resolved simply by changing the coaching staff.
"They have informed me they would like me to take the team on Sunday," Fletcher stated. "There was a feeling that might be the case on Monday, but we wanted to focus on Burnley. I am tasked with leading the team on Sunday, so all my focus and energy goes on that now."
The 'they' in Fletcher's comments refers to United's chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox, who were seen in the directors' box at Turf Moor looking pensive as the match concluded on a bitterly cold January night.
United's performance continues to be a source of frustration, particularly as they have managed only two wins from ten matches against teams currently in the bottom eight of the Premier League since early November.
In their last three matches, which included encounters with relegation-threatened teams like Wolves and Burnley, United has secured just three draws.
Despite dismissing Ruben Amorim following a disappointing 1-1 draw at Elland Road, the same issues persist. Fletcher has shifted away from Amorim's 3-4-3 formation to a back four, yet defensive vulnerabilities remain. United has only managed to keep two clean sheets all season, a statistic Fletcher acknowledges is unacceptable.
"It has been proven over the season that we give up goals too easily," said Fletcher, a former United and Scotland midfielder. "We need to improve our defending as a team and not concede so many goals."
Another critical issue is United's inability to capitalize on scoring opportunities. Amorim's goals-per-game ratio was the second-lowest of any United manager in the Premier League era, only surpassed by Ralf Rangnick. Fletcher's first match in charge saw a slight improvement, but the team managed to score only twice from 30 shots, with ten on target.
Burnley managed to clear two goal-bound efforts off the line, and Benjamin Sesko missed a couple of chances to complete a hat-trick. Additionally, Lisandro Martinez had a goal disallowed for a foul on Kyle Walker.
"I am not sure why," Fletcher remarked. "We should have won the match."
Brighton now represents a crucial hurdle in United's last hope for silverware this season. By that time, Berrada and Wilcox are expected to speak with leading candidates Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick about taking over as caretaker managers.
The upcoming matches will not be easy, with United facing Manchester City at home and Arsenal away in their next two Premier League fixtures.
Despite the challenges, there were some positives from the match. Sesko, who had not scored since October, netted twice, bringing his total to four goals after a pair of well-executed finishes from passes by Bruno Fernandes and Patrick Dorgu.
"I sat down with him yesterday and showed him videos of his movement and how opportunities will come," said Fletcher. "It's just about keeping the belief and making the right runs. Hopefully, the goals will keep coming from now on. It was a real positive night for him."
Another bright spot was Shea Lacey, who made a six-minute appearance and showed promise. His first attacking attempt resulted in a shot that hit the crossbar, and his second effort narrowly missed the target.
Fletcher expressed confidence in Lacey's potential, stating, "I told him to stay wide on the right and play his game. I know he can make an impact. He is creative, direct, and fearless. I am really pleased with his performance; he has a bright future ahead at Manchester United."
