Manchester United's Ruben Amorim Comments on Bruno Fernandes' Absence
Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has stated that it is "impossible" to replace Bruno Fernandes as the team prepares for an extended period without their captain.
Fernandes was forced to leave the pitch during Sunday's 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa due to a hamstring injury. Amorim indicated at that time that the Portugal midfielder would miss Friday's match against Newcastle (20:00 GMT).
While Amorim refrained from providing a concrete timeline for Fernandes' recovery during a media briefing on Wednesday, he expressed optimism that the absence would not be lengthy.
Sources suggest that the 31-year-old may return in time for the Manchester derby against City at Old Trafford on January 17, which would result in a five-match absence.
This setback comes at a challenging time, as key attackers Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo are participating in the Africa Cup of Nations, and Kobbie Mainoo, who would be a natural replacement for Fernandes, is also sidelined with a calf injury.
“It is impossible to replace Bruno,” Amorim remarked. “I communicated this to the team this morning. We need to find a silver lining in this situation—many players will need to step up.”
Since joining from Sporting in January 2020, Fernandes has maintained an impressive fitness record, missing only two games due to injury and one for illness. His current absence marks the longest stretch without him for Manchester United, although it is not as severe as initial fears of a six-week layoff.
“It’s not just about creativity,” Amorim added. “He organizes the team during set pieces and understands every position on the field. He pays attention to every detail. Whenever there’s a substitution, he is the one guiding his teammates on positioning.”
‘I Trust My Players’
Amorim identified Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw as senior players who could rise to the occasion, although it was Fernandes’ fellow Portugal international Diogo Dalot who took on the captaincy at Villa Park.
It is unfortunate for Mainoo, who has been waiting for his opportunity all season, that he is unable to fill Fernandes’ role on the field; however, Amorim expects him to return to action first.
With defenders Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire still unavailable, and Noussair Mazraoui also representing United at the Africa Cup of Nations, Amorim will be missing seven senior players for the match against Newcastle. The only returnee will be Casemiro, who is back from a one-match ban.
This situation is likely to lead to increased playing time for academy players Jack Fletcher and Shea Lacey, both of whom made their senior debuts in the second half against Villa.
After struggling to capitalize on opportunities to ascend into the Champions League spots, Amorim must now secure results with a significantly depleted squad against opponents his team is expected to defeat, especially with upcoming matches against Wolves, Leeds, and Burnley, all of whom are fighting against relegation.
The former Sporting coach remains optimistic about their prospects. “I am confident we can win any game,” he stated. “Certainly, we have some challenges, but even with many players absent, I believe in the team and trust my players. If we remain focused, we can secure victories.”
