Marcus Rashford Thrives at Barcelona After Initial Struggles
"He is unbelievable. He has more potential he can show us."
This was the assessment of Hansi Flick regarding Marcus Rashford back in September, prior to the forward's return to England for his inaugural Champions League match with Barcelona.
Flick's confidence seemed to motivate Rashford, who scored his first two goals for the Catalan club, leading them to a 2-1 victory against Newcastle at St James' Park.
This marked the breakthrough Rashford had been anticipating since his loan move from Manchester United to Barcelona in July, a transfer that raised several questions.
What role would he assume at Barcelona? Would he gain Flick's trust? Would the club consider making his move permanent?
As the season pauses for its second international break, Rashford has participated in 10 matches for Barcelona, and the early signs are encouraging.
Beyond the statistics, Rashford is earning the support of Barcelona fans. While some believe it is too early to evaluate his performance, others have dubbed him a "pleasant surprise."
"You can tell that little by little, he is gaining more confidence," remarked Alejandro, a lifelong supporter. "He’s been giving us a lot of joy. We can see that he’s really hungry to succeed, so, at the moment, all the fans and the whole team support him."
Another fan, Pablo, expressed optimism, stating he believes Rashford can "exceed the expectations that many fans had for him."
Initial Struggles
When Rashford made his La Liga debut as a substitute on August 16, in a 3-0 victory against Mallorca, expectations were modest.
He joined Barcelona after falling out of favor at Manchester United, essentially as the third-choice option for the attacking position the club sought to strengthen.
Barcelona aimed to recruit a forward to support Raphinha on the left wing and add depth to their attack, turning to the 27-year-old after missing out on other targets, including Athletic Club's Nico Williams and Liverpool's Luis Diaz.
Rashford's league debut was unremarkable, and his following two appearances in the Spanish league were similarly uneventful, with the forward playing no more than 45 minutes in each match.
At the time, Spanish media characterized Rashford as 'a fuego lento', or a 'slow-burner', suggesting that his best performances were during pre-season against less challenging opponents and without competitive pressure.
However, a goal for England in their 5-0 win over Serbia during the World Cup qualifiers in early September sparked a series of more impactful performances.
Growing Influence
Injuries to Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, and Robert Lewandowski have paved the way for Rashford's resurgence, granting him an extended run in Flick's starting eleven, where his influence on Barcelona's attack has steadily increased.
He has started in six of the last seven matches across all competitions. The only match he did not start was against Getafe due to arriving late to the team's morning meeting, although he played the entire second half.
Barcelona sources indicated that Rashford was two minutes late, prompting Flick to enforce his strict policy of excluding players from the starting line-up for tardiness.
In fact, it was the only match out of the last seven where Rashford was not directly involved in a goal, either by scoring or assisting.
A Point to Prove
Rashford's development has garnered admiration, beginning with a first assist against Valencia, followed by two Champions League goals against Newcastle, and additional assists against Oviedo and Real Sociedad in La Liga, as well as Paris St-Germain in the Champions League.
In his final match before the second international break, Rashford scored his first La Liga goal, albeit a consolation in Barcelona's 4-1 defeat to Sevilla.
Two of his assists came from corner kicks, an area where Barcelona previously lacked potency. Spanish media noted his contributions, with one report stating: "With his precise delivery, Barca has found a new weapon on set-pieces."
Rashford's standout Champions League performance against Newcastle received particular praise from Flick.
"He’s a fantastic player, a great talent, and his finishing is incredible," said the former Bayern Munich and Germany manager. "For a striker, it’s always great to score goals, and so I’m really happy for him. Before the start of the season, [sporting director] Deco and I said we needed a player like him."
Barcelona's Leading Goal Contributor
Rashford has become Barcelona's top goal contributor across all competitions this season, with three goals and four assists.
Ferran Torres has netted five goals and provided one assist, totaling six contributions, while Lamine Yamal has scored twice and recorded three assists but has missed four matches due to an injury sustained during the September international break.
Rashford has registered the joint-most shots (27) and shots on target (11) and has made the most touches in the opposition box (69) among Barcelona players. He ranks second for chances created (18), behind Pedri (24).
Barcelona's official website published an article in early October praising Rashford for his "effort and consistency," highlighting his "incredible numbers for a newcomer," suggesting that the Englishman is intent on leaving his mark in Barcelona.
Since donning the Barcelona jersey, Rashford has contributed to a goal every 88 minutes, ranking him fifth in La Liga for minutes per goal involvement, behind only Kylian Mbappe, Julian Alvarez, Vinicius Junior, and Alvaro Garcia.
It is worth noting that in the 2022-23 season, Rashford scored over 30 goals for Manchester United, finishing as the sixth top scorer in the Premier League. That season highlighted Rashford's potential when given confidence and regular playing time, and Barcelona is hopeful that his previous form is returning.
Future at Barcelona
Rashford arrived in Barcelona eager to make an impact and embark on a positive new chapter in his career.
The club holds an option to sign him permanently for £30.3 million (35 million euros) in 2026, but Deco has indicated that discussions regarding this will take place at a later date.
"It’s too early to talk about decisions for next season, but what matters is that we’re happy with him," the director of football stated.
This sentiment was echoed by another club source, who remarked, "We’re all delighted and thrilled with him and his performance; Deco, Flick, and his teammates. Marcus is also happy with us, his teammates, and the city of Barcelona. It’s obvious that if he continues to develop like this, there’s a very good chance that this will be the case. But we’re only at the beginning of the season, and it’s still too early to talk about next steps."
