Mason Greenwood Approaches Return to International Football with Jamaica
Mason Greenwood is on the verge of returning to international football after acquiring Jamaican citizenship and obtaining a Jamaican passport.
Greenwood has not represented England since his debut cap against Iceland in September 2020, after which he was sent home within 48 hours alongside Manchester City's Phil Foden for violating COVID-19 quarantine protocols.
With his Jamaican passport secured, Greenwood only requires a transfer from the Football Association (FA) to the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) to be eligible to participate in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Bermuda and Trinidad and Tobago next month.
In February 2023, Greenwood left Manchester United after charges of attempted rape and assault were dropped. He subsequently joined Spanish club Getafe on loan and signed with Ligue 1 side Marseille on a permanent basis in 2024.
The 23-year-old recently scored in Marseille's pre-season 1-1 draw with Sevilla and has been linked to potential moves to Inter Milan and Saudi Pro-League club Al-Nassr.
Greenwood is part of Jamaica's renewed initiative, under the management of former England coach Steve McClaren, to recruit players raised in the UK through their family connections. Brentford's Rico Henry and Tottenham's Tyrese Hall, who is currently on loan at Notts County, are also among those targeted.
Jamaica aims to qualify for the World Cup for only the second time, having previously achieved this feat in 1998.
