Mason Greenwood's International Future Uncertain Amid Jamaica Allegiance
England manager Thomas Tuchel has confirmed that he has not been in contact with former Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood, stating that the player is currently "not in our thoughts."
Greenwood, 23, departed Manchester United after charges against him, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped in February 2023. Following his exit, he joined Spanish club Getafe on loan and later signed a permanent deal with Marseille in 2024, where he has made a notable impact by scoring 23 goals in 39 appearances across all competitions.
Having earned just one cap for England during a Nations League match against Iceland in September 2020, Greenwood has begun the process of switching his international allegiance to Jamaica. He has obtained a Jamaican passport but has yet to complete the necessary change of association form, indicating he is not ready to fully commit to representing the Caribbean nation.
This indecision has frustrated Jamaica's coach, Steve McClaren, while Tuchel has now ruled out the possibility of Greenwood returning to the England squad. "I have not spoken to him or his camp until now," Tuchel stated during a news conference. "My understanding was that he is trying to play for Jamaica, so we didn’t give it another thought. He is not in the mix at the moment and is not in our thoughts for the team."
McClaren had hoped to include Greenwood in his squad for upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Bermuda and Trinidad and Tobago, but reported that Greenwood is "not going to commit at this time to anybody."
Reflecting on Greenwood's international future, the former England boss remarked, "He is taking his time over that, so it’s a little disappointing. We probably have to be more patient. However, we will keep in contact and continue pursuing him because I know from my conversations with Mason and his family that he loves Jamaica and respects Jamaica. He wants to focus on club football right now and is not ready to commit to an international team at this moment. We have to respect that, no matter how hard we’ve worked to get him here for these camps. So, who knows what the future holds?"
