Mateo Retegui, last season's top scorer in Italy's Serie A, has transferred from Atalanta to Saudi Pro League club Al-Qadsiah.
According to Italian media, Al-Qadsiah has paid over £56 million for the 26-year-old striker, who has signed a four-year contract. This transfer fee makes Retegui the most expensive Italian player to date, surpassing Sandro Tonali's £55 million move from AC Milan to Newcastle in 2023.
Retegui, originally from Argentina but representing Italy, joined Atalanta from Genoa last summer and netted 25 league goals in 36 matches, contributing to the team's third-place finish.
He debuted for the Italian national team in 2023, scoring in a 2-1 loss against England, and has since scored six goals in 20 appearances for Italy.
"The Percassi family, the Pagliuca family, and the entire Nerazzurri club sincerely thank Mateo for his extraordinary contribution last season and wish him the best for his future endeavors," stated Atalanta.
Al-Qadsiah finished fourth in the Saudi Pro League last season. Retegui will replace Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the former striker for Arsenal, Barcelona, and Chelsea, at the Saudi Arabian club.
The 36-year-old Gabon international left Al-Qadsiah last week and is reportedly nearing a deal with French Ligue 1 club Marseille.
