Max Dowman Shines on Premier League Debut for Arsenal
Max Dowman was seen laughing as Declan Rice playfully bounced a ball off his backside during an open training session on Arsenal's pre-season tour in Hong Kong this summer.
The 15-year-old attempted to replicate the playful skill, only to be interrupted by manager Mikel Arteta, who playfully punched the ball away, halting Dowman's attempt in a light-hearted moment.
This incident served as a reminder that despite the immense talent Dowman has displayed during his outings for the Arsenal first team in pre-season, he is still a Year 10 student.
The training session occurred just a day before he substituted for Arsenal star Bukayo Saka against Tottenham Hotspur at the Kai Tak Stadium. Upon entering the match, the teenager quickly emerged as one of Arsenal's most dynamic attacking players.
Dowman's performances as a substitute were among the highlights of Arsenal's pre-season, where he dazzled with his runs down the right flank and earned two penalties against Newcastle United and Villarreal.
At 15 years and 234 days old, he has become the second youngest player in the club's history, following teammate Ethan Nwaneri, who made his debut at 15 years and 181 days in September 2022 against Brentford.
Dowman came off the bench in the 64th minute against Leeds, thrilling the home crowd with a mesmerizing run that ended when he was fouled by left-back Gabriel Gudmundsson, who received a yellow card.
In added time, Dowman showcased his quick footwork again, drawing a foul from Anton Stach in the penalty area. Viktor Gyokeres converted the resulting penalty, sealing a 5-0 victory for Arsenal.
'Dowman Can Deliver Things I've Never Seen in My Life'
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta praised Dowman's impact, stating, "This is what we see every single day in training." He elaborated on how the club has monitored Dowman's adaptability and readiness for match situations, particularly after being left out of the squad against Manchester United.
Arteta commended Dowman's family for raising a young man with remarkable maturity, stability, and ambition, qualities that are rare at such a young age. He also recognized the efforts of the academy staff, including Per Mertesacker and the coaches involved in Dowman's development.
Arteta remarked, "There is a kid here that has zero hesitation and is so convinced that at 15 he can go and deliver, which I have never witnessed in my life. For us, he brings joy, emotion, and something that makes our jobs so rewarding."
Dowman's talent has not surprised those familiar with Arsenal's youth setup. He has been training with the first team since he was 14 and participated in a warm-weather training camp in Dubai earlier this year. Fans had previously called for his inclusion during last season when injuries plagued Arteta's squad.
He represented England Under-17s in the Euros this summer, becoming the youngest scorer of the tournament with a goal against the Czech Republic. Dowman also played three years above his age group for Arsenal's Under-18s, where he scored 19 goals and provided five assists in 23 games last season, with a remarkable 17 goal involvements in the final seven matches of the Under-18 Premier League South season.
Due to age restrictions, he was unable to make his Premier League debut last season, but he is now eligible. With potential injuries to key players like Saka, the young winger may soon find himself in the spotlight more frequently.
Dowman replaced Saka in four pre-season matches before receiving a break against Athletic Bilbao, but he appears ready for what could be a breakout season. Arteta emphasized the need to "protect" Dowman on his journey, but his teammates have not hesitated to express their admiration for him.
"I think everyone can see the potential he has. Playing against grown men, he is a joy to watch, and for the crowd, he is a joy to watch. Hopefully, he will have many amazing years here," said teammate Jurrien Timber after the match.
With injuries affecting Arsenal players Kai Havertz, Martin Odegaard, and Saka, more Premier League opportunities may be on the horizon for Dowman.
