Messi Leads Inter Miami to Playoff Qualification with Victory Over NYC FC
Lionel Messi scored twice as Inter Miami defeated New York City FC 4-0, securing their place in the Major League Soccer playoffs.
Baltasar Rodriguez opened the scoring for the visitors just before halftime, and Argentina captain Messi, 38, doubled the lead in the 74th minute.
Former Liverpool and Barcelona striker Luis Suarez added a penalty before Messi netted his 24th goal in 23 matches, sealing the victory.
“We are happy because now we are officially qualified for the playoffs. That was very important for us. Now we have to continue moving forward,” said head coach Javier Mascherano.
Messi's double brought his total to five goals in just nine days, having scored two or more goals in eight of the last 12 matches for Inter Miami.
Currently, Miami sits third in the Eastern Conference, trailing leaders Philadelphia Union by five points, with two games in hand.
The team with the best regular season record will win the MLS Supporters' Shield, while the playoff champion will claim the MLS Cup.
