Middlesbrough Maintains Unbeaten Start with Draw Against Southampton
Substitute Kaly Sene helped Championship leaders Middlesbrough preserve their unbeaten start to the season as they came from behind to secure a draw against Southampton.
Just five minutes after entering the match, Senegalese forward Sene netted his second goal in as many games with a deflected strike. This result extends Boro's impressive run to five wins and two draws under manager Rob Edwards, keeping them four points clear at the top of the table.
In contrast, Southampton is now without a league win in six matches and sits just two points above the relegation zone. Captain Adam Armstrong had initially put the Saints ahead shortly after the hour mark, but they were unable to hold on for the crucial three points.
Southampton's head coach, Will Still, made six changes to his starting lineup following their loss to Hull City last week, including alterations to the goalkeeper position and three of the four defenders, in search of a winning formula.
Edwards, however, has faced no such issues in his early weeks at Middlesbrough. He witnessed wing-back Matt Targett come close to giving Boro the lead with a free-kick that struck the woodwork. Finn Azaz, a former Boro player, had Southampton's best chance of the first half, but he failed to convert after a Ryan Manning shot deflected into his path inside the box.
Armstrong eventually broke the deadlock with a well-placed finish from Tom Fellows' cross, marking his second goal of the season. He had previously scored 24 goals during Southampton's promotion campaign two seasons ago.
In an effort to turn the game around, Edwards made five substitutions, one of whom was Sene, who ultimately made the difference. The new signing from Swiss club Lausanne Sports connected with a long pass from Luke Ayling, and his shot deflected off Nathan Wood, finding the back of the net past the recalled Alex McCarthy. This ensured Middlesbrough maintained their strong start to the season.
‘We found a way’ - Reaction
Southampton head coach Will Still commented to BBC Radio Solent:
“The performance was really positive and encouraging, but we need to turn those into points and wins. They are top of the league for a reason, but we managed to nullify their threat, forcing them to change their system and shape. I think they will be pleased with a point.”
“Many players who performed well on Tuesday deserved to return to the team, and we need to find that balance—we're almost there. We’re fine-tuning our approach and are close to converting promising performances into wins, which is what we need to do.”
Middlesbrough head coach Rob Edwards stated to BBC Radio Tees:
“I’m satisfied with the point. Overall, it was a tough game, and you could sense that. The crowd was very supportive, and they made several changes that took us by surprise. We played well in the first half but gave them some opportunities due to sloppiness.”
“As the game progressed, we grew into it and were dominant, but they scored. We had to step up our game, made some adjustments, and found a way back into it. Last time we were away from home, we also fought back. It shows good character and the impact from the substitutes, which is pleasing. The players are adaptable, and we found a way.”
