Millwall's Azeez Sparks Victory Against Sheffield Wednesday
Femi Azeez broke Sheffield Wednesday's resilient defense at The Den, reigniting Millwall's Championship promotion ambitions.
Millwall had managed just two points from their last four league matches, and bottom-placed Wednesday initially frustrated their efforts. However, substitute Azeez made a significant impact, scoring his fifth goal in six appearances.
Under the management of Alex Neil, Millwall has surged to fourth place in the table, reviving their unlikely promotion hopes.
Sheffield Wednesday, now a daunting 20 points adrift of safety, came close to scoring with attempts from Charlie McNeill and Jamal Lowe that struck the woodwork.
In stark contrast to their disappointing performance in the Steel City derby against Sheffield United, Wednesday showed improvement. Barry Bannan's left-footed curler was saved by Max Crocombe, and the Millwall goalkeeper also made a fantastic fingertip stop to deny Bailey Cadamarteri's long-range effort.
Yan Valery missed a clear chance, shooting over when he should have found the target, while Crocombe had to backpedal to deflect Bannan's audacious shot from outside the center circle.
Millwall struggled to find their rhythm early on, with Caleb Taylor heading wide at the back post and Thierno Ballo being denied by Ethan Horvath. The Lions were fortunate when McNeill's powerful shot hit the underside of the bar, but they capitalized on their pressure as Camiel Neghli and Luke Cundle both came close before Azeez had a header saved.
The breakthrough came in the 71st minute when Alfie Doughty delivered a precise cross for Azeez, who headed home from five yards out just ten minutes after his introduction.
Even after taking the lead, Wednesday nearly equalized, with Lowe's 20-yard shot striking the outside of the post.
Neil Praises 'Professional Performance'
Millwall manager Alex Neil spoke to BBC Radio London:
"In the second half, we created numerous chances. They had a couple of opportunities as well, but overall, I believe we deserved the win. These matches are challenging; they are a tough team to face and play with a sense of freedom since they have nothing to lose. We needed to deliver a professional performance to take control of the game, which we ultimately did.
"We've won four out of five at home and currently sit fourth in the table, despite having a lengthy injury list since the season began. The players deserve immense credit for their achievement."
Sheffield Wednesday manager Henrik Pedersen also spoke to BBC Radio Sheffield:
"The boys showed great heart, a fantastic mentality, and strong teamwork. We worked diligently against a very good opponent. We had significant chances at crucial moments, and we need to improve our finishing. We're working on that, but the essentials for winning matches are having a strong heart and unity, which the boys demonstrated effectively. After our performance on Sunday, we addressed the issues honestly, had a productive meeting, and the response was commendable."
