Mozambique Achieves Historic Victory Over Gabon in Afcon
Mozambique celebrated a thrilling 3-2 victory against Gabon in Agadir, marking their first-ever win at the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon). This victory ended a long-standing streak in which the Mambas had failed to secure a win in any of their first 16 matches at the finals.
This result significantly enhances Chiquinho Conde's team's chances of advancing to the knockout stage for the first time. Conversely, it dealt a severe blow to Gabon's aspirations after they also suffered a loss in their opening Group F match against Cameroon.
Faisal Bangal opened the scoring with a header from a corner, followed by Geny Catamo converting a penalty, putting Mozambique in a commanding position. However, Gabon captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang capitalized on a rebound just before halftime, pulling one back for the Panthers.
In the second half, Mozambique restored their two-goal lead with a header from the dynamic right-back Diogo Calila. Yet, Aubameyang again found the net, tucking away a loose ball to bring Gabon back into contention.
The final 20 minutes were intensely competitive, with both teams fiercely battling for dominance.
Following this match, Mozambique, currently ranked 102nd in the world, is positioned third in Group F, sharing points with group leaders Ivory Coast and Cameroon, who are set to clash later in Marrakesh on Sunday at 20:00 GMT.
Gabon must secure a victory against Ivory Coast in their final group match in Marrakesh on Wednesday to retain any hope of advancing, while Mozambique will face Cameroon simultaneously in Agadir at 19:00 GMT.
