Napoli Tops Serie A with Comeback Victory Against Genoa
Rasmus Hojlund's goal sealed a comeback for Napoli as the Italian champions triumphed over winless Genoa with a score of 2-1, reclaiming the top position in Serie A.
Hojlund capitalized on a rebound in the penalty area with 15 minutes remaining, marking his fourth goal for the club since his summer transfer from Manchester United.
Genoa took the lead in the 33rd minute when Jeff Ekhator stunned the home crowd with a brilliant backheel finish. However, Napoli equalized 12 minutes into the second half, as Frank Anguissa reacted swiftly to a loose ball in the penalty area.
Napoli's manager, Antonio Conte, made the decision to leave Kevin de Bruyne out of the starting lineup, which led to difficulties in breaking down Genoa's defensive formation despite dominating possession with 72% in the first half.
The situation worsened for Napoli as key players Stanislav Lobotka and winger Matteo Politano were forced to leave the match due to injuries around halftime.
De Bruyne came on for Politano early in the second half and had an immediate impact; his attempt to connect with Leonardo Spinazzola's cross caused chaos in the Genoa defense, allowing Anguissa to score.
Just minutes after having a goal disallowed for an offside infringement, Hojlund was in the right place at the right time to score when Anguissa's shot was parried into the danger zone by Genoa goalkeeper Nicola Leali.
This victory places Napoli at the top of the Serie A table on goal difference, level with Roma, both teams having accumulated 15 points.
Meanwhile, Patrick Vieira's Genoa remains in the relegation zone with only two points and no wins after six matches.
Following the international break, Napoli will travel to Turin to face Torino on Saturday, October 18, while Genoa will host Parma on Sunday, October 19.
