Newcastle Held to Draw by 10-Man Aston Villa
Newcastle United struggled to find the net in the absence of wantaway striker Alexander Isak, finishing in a stalemate against 10-man Aston Villa.
Aston Villa played the last 24 minutes plus stoppage time with a man down after Ezri Konsa received a red card. However, without Isak—who is attempting to secure a transfer to Liverpool—the Magpies could not capitalize on their numerical advantage.
During a dominant first half, both Anthony Elanga and Anthony Gordon squandered key opportunities. Debutant Marco Bizot made an impressive save to deny Elanga, who joined the team for £55 million, just three minutes into the match. Gordon then missed a free header, placing it over the bar.
Playing centrally in place of Isak, Gordon tested Bizot again, but Newcastle failed to convert their superiority into goals.
Villa, who did not register a shot in the first half—the first home team to do so in a Premier League match since Fulham against Manchester City in May 2024—returned from the break with renewed determination.
Boubacar Kamara directed a header straight at Nick Pope, while Ollie Watkins also shot directly at the goalkeeper. Konsa's dismissal, following a foul on Gordon as he broke free, forced the hosts to focus on securing a point.
