Manager Eddie Howe has emphasized that any decision regarding Alexander Isak's future must align with Newcastle United's best interests. The striker is contemplating his future at the club amidst reported interest from Liverpool.
Isak did not accompany the squad to Singapore on Thursday, with Newcastle citing a thigh injury. However, the Swedish international is reportedly exploring potential moves. According to a source from BBC Sport, Liverpool remains interested in the 25-year-old, despite recently acquiring Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt for an initial £69 million.
Prior to Newcastle's pre-season friendly against Arsenal on Sunday, Howe acknowledged, "There are certainly discussions happening behind the scenes. Isak is aware of the ongoing media attention, which is undoubtedly challenging for anyone in his position. Conversations between Alex, the club, and myself will remain private for obvious reasons."
Howe continued, "We share a strong relationship. Alex has been outstanding for us since his arrival and is well-liked in the dressing room. We would love for him to continue his journey at Newcastle. However, any decisions must ultimately benefit Newcastle."
Isak, who joined from Real Sociedad in August 2022 for approximately £60 million, is under contract until June 2028. Last season, he scored 27 goals in 42 appearances across all competitions for Newcastle.
Following Isak's absence from a 4-0 friendly defeat against Celtic, Howe had previously stated that the player would "absolutely" be part of the squad traveling to Singapore and South Korea. Howe explained that Isak is currently in Newcastle undergoing assessment for his injury, expressing hope for his prompt return to play in the team's colors.
Howe elaborated, "He first mentioned discomfort in his thigh before the Celtic game. We initially believed it to be a minor issue. However, on Monday after the Celtic match, he went for training early and felt unwell."
While Howe has yet to engage in direct discussions with Newcastle's board regarding Isak's future, he noted that any contract negotiations would occur "at a later date." Asked about Isak's potential departure, Howe remarked, "I expressed after the Celtic game that I am hopeful and confident he will stay. At present, I see no reason to alter that view, although the unpredictable nature of football means anything is possible."
"We are in a robust financial position," Howe added. "Our ambition is to succeed and grow. With a promising season ahead, we aim to strengthen the squad and continue our upward trajectory. This is the journey we all aspire to be on."
