Newcastle United Advances in Carabao Cup with Victory Over Bradford City
Joelinton and William Osula each netted two goals as defending champions Newcastle United began their Carabao Cup campaign with a convincing win against Bradford City.
Under the management of Eddie Howe, Newcastle ended a 70-year drought for major domestic trophies by lifting the Carabao Cup at Wembley last season, defeating Liverpool.
The Magpies took control of this third-round match against the League One leaders with two quick goals in the first half at St James' Park.
Joelinton opened the scoring in the 17th minute, capitalizing on a loose ball in the penalty area after Anthony Gordon's initial shot was blocked.
Just two minutes later, striker Osula doubled Newcastle's advantage, connecting with a brilliant through-ball from Bruno Guimaraes and calmly finishing past Bradford goalkeeper Sam Walker.
Newcastle continued to create chances in the second half, and Joelinton extended the lead to 3-0 in the 75th minute with a composed finish from inside the box.
Bradford managed to pull one back late in the game, with substitute Andy Cook, a lifelong Newcastle supporter, striking a powerful shot that hit the underside of the bar and went in from the edge of the area.
However, Osula quickly restored the hosts' three-goal cushion with a close-range finish, securing Newcastle's place in the last 16 of the competition.
