Newcastle United Dominates Bradford City in Carabao Cup Match
Bradford City manager Graham Alexander expressed a mix of pride and realism after his team's 4-1 defeat to Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup.
“When we exchanged team sheets and saw Bruno Guimarães leading the lineup, I knew they were taking this match seriously,” he remarked.
The holders, aiming to defend their title, were determined not to let their campaign end prematurely, especially after a 70-year wait for major domestic silverware.
Interestingly, Guimarães and Joelinton were the only starters from Wednesday night who also played in the final against Liverpool when Newcastle ended their trophy drought back in March.
Despite Bradford's efforts, Newcastle’s depth proved too much for the League One leaders. Head coach Eddie Howe acknowledged, “The lads are very aware of the strength in depth. Everyone knows that if they don’t perform well, there’s someone ready to take their place.”
Consistency in Approach: 'Nothing Changes Whether We’re Playing Bradford or Barcelona'
Newcastle's current squad depth is a stark contrast to previous seasons, where they faced early exits against League One teams in the FA Cup in both 2022 and 2023.
Defender Dan Burn emphasized the team's consistent approach, stating in his program notes, “Nothing changes whether we’re playing Bradford or Barcelona. The preparation and mentality remain the same.”
Howe had the luxury of making seven changes from their recent Premier League draw against Bournemouth, yet key players like Lewis Hall, Malick Thiaw, Sven Botman, Joelinton, Guimarães, Anthony Gordon, and Anthony Elanga still took the field against Bradford.
Notably, William Osula scored two goals, while debutant goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale made crucial saves when the score was still 0-0.
“You need that strength in depth to keep everyone on their toes,” Howe added. “There can’t be any complacency; a poor performance can cost you your place.”

Newcastle matched their total goals from the previous five games in just 90 minutes against Bradford. This marked the first time since April, during a 5-0 victory over Crystal Palace, that they scored four goals in a single match. The dominant hosts recorded 27 shots, 11 on target, and 66 touches in the opposition box.
While tougher challenges lie ahead, this match served as a significant confidence boost for the team, especially after struggling offensively with only one shot on target against Bournemouth and just three goals in their first five league matches.
In terms of shot conversion rates, Newcastle has struggled, recording only a 5.6% conversion rate and 28.6% for big chances, trailing only Aston Villa in terms of goals scored.
However, Joelinton and Osula, the 22-year-old forward who has now scored three goals this season, made timely contributions. Osula had also scored against champions Liverpool last month.
With Yoane Wissa sidelined due to a knee injury and record signing Nick Woltemade still adjusting to the Premier League's physicality, Osula’s performance was especially welcome. He had drawn interest from Eintracht Frankfurt last month.
