Newcastle United's Transfer Developments: Nick Woltemade and Alexander Isak
Newcastle United is in the process of acquiring Nick Woltemade, but head coach Eddie Howe has not provided any assurances regarding the future of Alexander Isak.
The 23-year-old Woltemade arrived in Tyneside on Thursday and is expected to undergo a medical examination on Friday prior to finalizing his transfer from Stuttgart.
While a transfer fee has yet to be confirmed, sources indicate it could set a club record, surpassing the £63 million fee paid for Isak three years ago.
Howe suggested that it is unlikely Woltemade will be registered in time to make his Premier League debut against Leeds United on Saturday, emphasizing that the priority is to secure a center-forward.
“Things are moving and developing positively at the moment,” Howe stated. “Until everything is finalized, I can’t confirm anything – but fingers crossed.”
If Newcastle successfully completes the signing of Woltemade, it may prompt Liverpool to renew their interest in Isak in the closing days of the transfer window, following a rejected £110 million bid last month.
In a statement released last week, Newcastle indicated they do not expect their conditions for selling Isak, 25, to be met. This includes the need to secure two quality strikers and receive an acceptable offer from Liverpool.
Finalizing a deal for Woltemade marks a significant first step, and Howe mentioned that the club is “still looking” for opportunities to potentially enhance the squad further.
He reiterated that Isak could be reintegrated into the team but acknowledged the difficulty in providing clarity about the player's future.
“Of course, I have a preference, but ultimately, you need to consider all the information,” he remarked. “I have a footballing preference, but you must account for everything else.”
Howe expressed the need to detach himself from the emotional aspects of the situation, particularly as Isak has ceased training with his teammates.
“I decided that the squad needed me to be at my best and fully focused on them,” he explained. “This situation wasn’t going to be resolved quickly, and I had no control over bringing any resolution to it. I chose to move forward with the squad.”
