Nicolas Raskin Reflects on Challenging Season at Rangers
Rangers midfielder Nicolas Raskin feels he was misrepresented earlier this season after losing favor under former head coach Russell Martin.
Amid summer transfer speculation, the Belgian midfielder was sidelined for crucial matches as Rangers faced difficulties, prompting intense criticism from fans.
Raskin acknowledges that he had concerns about his future with the Scottish Premiership club but is now open to extending his contract, which has 18 months remaining.
"I believe there was a narrative created about me that didn’t reflect the reality within the club at that time," the 24-year-old stated as he looked ahead to Thursday's Europa League match against Sporting Braga.
"I can’t deny it was a challenging period for me. I’m still working to regain my best form, both physically and mentally. It hasn’t been easy, and I haven’t enjoyed every moment. I’ve seen a lot of inaccurate reports.
"I had to remain focused and strive to get back on the pitch and contribute to the team. Now, I’m looking forward and aiming to improve."
Martin had excluded Raskin from the squad for an Old Firm derby against Celtic, asserting that the decision was supported by senior players and suggesting that transfer rumors had distracted the Belgian.
"It was a tough time, and I had clear indications that my future was uncertain—but that’s in the past," Raskin, who joined Rangers from Standard Liege in 2023, remarked.
"We are now focused on building something new. I’m not one to seek out drama. I’m just trying to do my job, help the team as much as possible, and give my best for the club. Hopefully, we can secure our first three points tomorrow."
With his contract set to expire in the summer of 2027, Raskin expressed that if he were to leave the club, he would want Rangers to benefit from the situation.
"I’m very happy here," he stated. "We have a new manager, and we’re working to create something positive. I’m not making any decisions at this moment. I’m just waiting for someone to approach me while focusing on giving my best for the club.
"If I have to leave, I want everyone to be satisfied and to part ways amicably. It’s not entirely in my hands right now. I have no intention of leaving for free or anything like that. Honestly, I don’t want that.
"The club has done a lot for me, helping me reach the national team and allowing me to showcase my talents on a significant stage. So, if I can give back in any way, I will do my utmost to do so."
