Northern Ireland Prepares for Crucial World Cup Qualifier Against Slovakia

Northern Ireland goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell believes that Michael O'Neill's squad is at its strongest as they gear up for a critical World Cup qualifier against Slovakia on Friday.
Currently in third place in Group A, Northern Ireland trails Germany and Slovakia by three points. Their final game will be at home against Luxembourg on Monday at Windsor Park (19:45 GMT).
A repeat of last month’s victory over Slovakia would significantly enhance their chances of securing at least second place in the group and a playoff spot.
Peacock-Farrell, who has earned 52 international caps since his debut in 2018 but has yet to participate in a major tournament, sees this as a prime opportunity.
"It's incredibly exciting. The opportunity we have is immense. I genuinely believe we are the strongest we've ever been," said the 29-year-old.
He reflected on past disappointments, particularly after Euro 2016, but noted the current team's energy and fearlessness. "The level at which everyone is playing is high, and I believe many of these players have even more potential to reach. I have more to offer as well, and there’s significant potential for the squad to grow. These upcoming games, including tournaments, will only help elevate our performance further," he added.
'We Are in Good Form and Playing Well'
The on-loan Blackpool goalkeeper returned to the starting lineup for the World Cup qualifiers following a shoulder injury that sidelined Pierce Charles for the last four matches.
With Conor Hazard and Luke Southwood also vying for the starting position, Peacock-Farrell acknowledges the intense competition for the number one jersey. "I have the opportunity right now, and Pierce made the most of his chance while I was injured, which is commendable," he stated.
He added, "When Pierce returns, we will have a strong group for Michael to choose from, and it’s about focusing on what we can control: our performances at the club level and with the Northern Ireland team."
Northern Ireland's 2-0 victory against Slovakia at Windsor Park is considered one of the standout performances during Michael O'Neill's time as manager. However, Peacock-Farrell is aware that the upcoming match in Košice may present different challenges.
"They will have some key players returning, while we are missing a few. However, they will also remember how we effectively challenged them after their high from beating Germany. We played incredibly against Slovakia and felt unfortunate in our match against Germany. We're in good form and playing well," he said.
"International away games are always difficult, but we are not daunted. We recognize their strengths, as we do with every opponent, but looking back on my career with Northern Ireland, this team is very promising and exciting. There is a strong sense of belief, enthusiasm, and overall ability within the squad. It's a great time to be part of it."
