Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill has expressed that he would gladly trade his upcoming milestone games for World Cup qualifying points. O'Neill is set to lead his team in his 99th and 100th matches against Slovakia and Germany at Windsor Park over the next five days.
While hosting the four-time world champions Germany, who previously defeated Northern Ireland 3-1 in Cologne, would be a significant way to mark his centenary, O'Neill emphasizes that his primary focus is on securing results to propel the team towards next year's finals.
"It's a nice personal milestone for me, but I haven't dwelled on it too much," O'Neill told BBC Newsline. "The most crucial aspect is preparing the team. It’s challenging, but if we achieve a positive result on Friday, it will greatly enhance the team's mental state going into Monday's match."
O'Neill acknowledged the fatigue players experience between matches but noted that both games are vital opportunities. "We performed well in Cologne and were disappointed not to earn points, so we are hopeful for a better outcome on Monday," he added.
A victory on Friday would see Northern Ireland level with Group A leaders Slovakia on six points, as they aim to qualify for their first World Cup since 1986. Former international and BBC pundit Stuart Dallas described the upcoming match as one of the team's most significant in recent years.
However, O'Neill refrained from making sweeping statements just days before the match. "I believe too much emphasis is sometimes placed on such declarations. There are three points at stake, and it would be unwise to underestimate Luxembourg, as both we and Slovakia faced tough matches there. A win would bring us level with Slovakia, and we expect Germany to defeat Luxembourg, leading to all three teams having six points after three games before we face Germany on Monday night," he said.
'This Group Has Everything to Gain'
O'Neill noted that while playing in front of a passionate home crowd may add pressure, he has been encouraged by the intensity displayed by the players in training this week. "There is pressure in these matches, and you only truly understand it once you step onto the field. However, this is a young group with everything to gain, and I continually remind them of that," he stated, reflecting on the 10th anniversary of their 3-1 victory over Greece that secured qualification for Euro 2016.
"These players will experience many matches like this throughout their international careers, and I genuinely believe they are ready for such challenges. Slovakia is a formidable and experienced team, but we possess unique attributes that we must leverage in Friday's game," O'Neill concluded.
