Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill expressed frustration over his team's late arrival in Luxembourg for Thursday's 2026 World Cup qualifier but remained satisfied with their preparations. The squad convened in Liverpool on Sunday, utilizing the training facilities of the Premier League champions before traveling the day before their qualifying campaign opener.
Due to adverse weather conditions in southern England, the Irish Football Association reported that their chartered flight from Liverpool to Luxembourg was delayed. Consequently, the team arrived at their hotel shortly after 20:00 BST, less than 24 hours before the match at Stade de Luxembourg.
While O'Neill noted that the team typically travels two days before a match, he emphasized that the benefits of their training sessions in Liverpool outweighed the need for an earlier arrival in Luxembourg. "The players were fine; it's just a bit frustrating because once you complete your preparations, you want to get to the hotel as soon as possible. However, we had three excellent training days in Liverpool," he stated.
O'Neill added that the team conducted their matchday session in Liverpool on Wednesday morning, with plans for an additional training session on Thursday to refine their strategies, including set pieces.
Northern Ireland previously faced Luxembourg in November during the Nations League, where they led 2-0 before settling for a 2-2 draw, securing the points needed to top their group. O'Neill mentioned that familiarity with the stadium influenced the decision to conduct most of their preparations in Liverpool.
"The reality is you never know how much privacy you have during training at the stadium. Given our recent match here, the players are already familiar with the pitch, which alleviates the need for additional acclimatization. This also allows for a longer recovery period for the players compared to if we had trained in Luxembourg on Wednesday," he explained.
Squad Updates
Northern Ireland is missing several key players from their 25-man squad for the matches against Luxembourg and Germany, which will also be broadcast live on the BBC. Goalkeeper Pierce Charles and defenders Brodie Spencer and Dan Ballard are among those unavailable. However, O'Neill is confident that the players called up can meet the challenges ahead.
"We’ve brought in players to give them the opportunity, and I’m pleased with how they’ve trained. Many of our players have found that international football enhances their domestic careers, so they must seize this chance. Injuries to club players are beyond my control, but I believe we have enough depth to handle these two games," he stated.
Player Spotlight: Jamie Reid
One player in strong form is Jamie Reid, a striker for Stevenage, who has netted five goals in six matches to kick off the League One season. After scoring on his international debut against Romania in March 2024, Reid faced a setback due to a blood clot in his leg, which affected his performance in the following season and led to his absence from international squads in March and June.
O'Neill remarked, "Jamie had a frustrating injury that allowed him to train but prevented him from engaging in contact. This hindered his pre-season and impacted his form. However, he seems to have benefited from the break. He has had an excellent start to the season, looking strong and sharp, and is performing better than any of our other strikers right now."
