Nottingham Forest Appoints Sean Dyche Amid Relegation Struggles
Nottingham Forest finds itself in a precarious position this season.
After coming within one game of the Champions League last May, the club now sits in the Premier League relegation zone as of October, having appointed its third manager in just six weeks.
Sean Dyche has taken over from Ange Postecoglou on a contract that runs until the summer of 2027. Postecoglou was dismissed only 17 minutes after Saturday's 3-0 loss to Chelsea, ending his brief 39-day tenure.
Despite Postecoglou's optimistic claims that winning the Europa League was a target, he leaves as the shortest-serving permanent manager in both Forest and Premier League history.
Dyche's appointment was anticipated even before the weekend, as owner Evangelos Marinakis evaluated his options during the international break. A Nottingham resident and former Forest academy player, Dyche aims to restore confidence and identity to a season that has already gone awry due to self-inflicted issues.
But the question remains: Is Dyche the right choice for the job?
Dyche: A Leader of Men
Nottingham Forest has placed itself in a challenging position following the unsuccessful Postecoglou experiment. The club aimed to have a new manager in place before Thursday's Europa League match against Porto, and Dyche must work to reinstate the organization and solidity that was a hallmark under Nuno Espirito Santo, who led the team to a seventh-place finish last season.
Defensive players Murillo and Nikola Milenkovic struggled with Postecoglou's more open style, while goalkeeper Matz Sels, who shared the Golden Glove with Arsenal's David Raya last season, has yet to keep a clean sheet this term, contributing to at least one goal against Chelsea.
Midfielder Elliot Anderson has shown consistent form, leading the Premier League with 807 touches this season, but he remains an exception in a squad that has seen a significant turnover.
Dyche will need to quickly assess the squad's dynamics and mentality after Forest invested £180 million in 13 new players during the summer transfer window. Notably, around £120 million worth of talent was left out of the squad for Saturday's match, including James McAtee, Dilane Bakwa, Arnaud Kalimuendo, and record signing Omari Hutchinson, with only two summer signings, Douglas Luiz and Oleksandr Zinchenko, starting.
Insiders suggest that the squad may be bloated and lacks diversity in player types. The unity that was crucial to the team's previous success has been disrupted by Nuno's departure, and it falls on Dyche to restore that cohesion.
Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who played under Dyche at Burnley, described him as "one of the most charismatic men" who commands attention upon entering a room. Robinson praised Dyche's ability to connect with players, stating, "He gets the respect from the dressing room immediately. He’s a leader of men, capable of maximizing the potential of players who may not be at the top level. Players like Morgan Gibbs-White, Elliot Anderson, Neco Williams, and Callum Hudson-Odoi will thrive under his management."
Forest began the season with ambitions of European competition, and Postecoglou was brought in to secure trophies. However, the club now faces a battle against relegation. Dyche previously guided Burnley to seventh place in the Premier League in the 2017-18 season, achieving European qualification for the first time in over 50 years.
Despite Dyche's past challenges at Everton, where the team finished 17th and 15th, there are hopes that he can lead Forest to success in the Europa League. Robinson remains optimistic, stating, "The squad still has the potential to achieve their goals; it’s about changing the mentality. A losing streak is tough to break, but if anyone can do it, it’s him. He has the chance to build something here."
Forest Fans Fear Return to Mediocrity
The rapid managerial changes from Nuno to Dyche via Postecoglou underscore the confusion at the City Ground. While the desire for progress is commendable, the club's current predicament raises concerns about missteps made along the way.
Forest is now in its fourth season back in the Premier League after a 23-year absence, with Steve Cooper having secured promotion in 2022. However, the current focus is on avoiding relegation, and Matt Davies, host of the Forest Focus podcast, urges fans to adopt a realistic perspective following Dyche's appointment.
"It’s a dose of reality," Davies remarked. "We started the season with high hopes after our best campaign and significant investment in the squad. But we find ourselves in the relegation zone. It’s only eight games in, yet it’s a tough year to struggle when the promoted teams aren’t weak. One established Premier League club will likely go down, and if that’s us, we risk taking significant steps backward."
Davies expressed concern among fans about returning to the wilderness after 23 years, emphasizing the need for the club to get it right this time. "The fear is palpable; we absolutely don’t want to go back to the dark days of the past, and we certainly don’t want to do so due to self-inflicted wounds. If Sean Dyche represents a dose of reality, then so be it."
As the blame game begins regarding the club's current situation, Davies urges caution against singling out individuals. "It’s too simplistic to blame one person; there are multiple names involved—Nuno, Marinakis, Postecoglou, and Edu have all played central roles since last season. We need to take a step back and understand what has gone wrong and how to move forward."
