Nuno Espirito Santo Expresses Desire to Remain at Nottingham Forest Amid Uncertainty
Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo has expressed his desire to remain at the club.
The 51-year-old's future came into question following his comments on Friday regarding his changing relationship with club owner Evangelos Marinakis, stating they are "not as close" as before.
Addressing rumors about his position, Nuno remarked, "Where there's smoke, there's fire." However, ahead of the Premier League match against Crystal Palace on Sunday, he insisted he does not wish to leave.
When asked if he was attempting to manipulate his situation, Nuno dismissed the idea, telling Sky Sports, "That's nonsense. It doesn't make any kind of sense. We are focused on the game, and that is more important."
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his role, Nuno confirmed he plans to discuss transfer matters with Marinakis and Edu, the club's global head of football. "Yes, that’s what we need to do, and we’re going to do it," he added.
Sources have informed BBC Sport that Nuno's position remains precarious, despite last season's achievement of qualifying for Europe and their recent Premier League victory over Brentford. This uncertainty has reportedly affected the playing squad, who are aware of the ongoing situation.
Internal Tensions at Nottingham Forest
Despite Nuno's reassurances, it appears there is significant friction behind the scenes at the City Ground. If Forest continues to secure victories, the likelihood of his dismissal may diminish. Nonetheless, questions remain about whether Nuno can prevail in a conflict with the owner and head of football.
European football expert Julien Laurens shared his insights on BBC Radio 5 Live, stating, "This is a battle that Nuno will lose. We all know that once you start questioning your owner, it's done. His comments were unprompted, and he understands he cannot win this battle."
Laurens also noted the strained relationship between Nuno and Edu, suggesting that with the arrival of a new sporting director, there is a tendency to prefer working with familiar personnel.
Former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha commented that Nuno might contemplate resigning, given the breakdown in relations. "Nuno's reputation among the fanbase is strong, and they want to believe in him. However, the situation is complicated by gratitude towards the owner for his contributions in recent years," he explained.
Onuoha added, "With Edu in such a crucial role, he will likely want to bring in his own people. If he had the choice, would he select Nuno as his manager? Probably not. This tension will linger, but it’s unlikely that Marinakis and Edu would wish for Nuno to fail in order to make a change. Nonetheless, the relationship is strained, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Nuno decides to leave before being dismissed."
