Odegaard Unanimously Re-elected as Arsenal Captain Amid Criticism
Manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Martin Odegaard was the clear choice of players and staff to continue as Arsenal's captain this season, despite criticism from club legend Tony Adams.
Adams, a former captain who led the Gunners to four top-flight titles during his 19-year tenure, suggested that England midfielder Declan Rice, 26, should take over the armband this season to enhance their chances of winning the Premier League for the first time since 2004.
However, Arteta revealed that Odegaard, 26, was the unanimous choice following a vote conducted among the squad.
“My opinion is clear, and it’s not just my opinion; it’s shared by all the staff and especially the players,” said the Arsenal boss.
“I asked them to vote on the captaincy, and the result was overwhelmingly in favor of Martin Odegaard, by a significant margin. This is a clear indication of how they feel about who should lead them to defend, improve, and win the matches we aim to win. There’s no question about that.”
Odegaard has served as Arsenal's captain since 2022, but the team has yet to secure a trophy during his tenure, finishing as runners-up in the last three league campaigns.
This summer, the Gunners have invested around £190 million in new talent as they strive to capture a major trophy for the first time since winning the FA Cup in 2020, during Arteta’s inaugural season.
One of the standout signings is £64 million striker Viktor Gyokeres, whose goals are expected to be pivotal this season. Arteta emphasized that they are committed to maximizing the potential of the 27-year-old Swede following his lengthy transfer from Sporting.
“We are going to do everything,” added the Spaniard, who will also have £60 million midfielder Martin Zubimendi available for Arsenal’s season opener against Manchester United on Sunday. “First, we need to understand the player and create the conditions for him to fulfill his incredible potential. This is crucial, and the good news is that many strikers have successfully transitioned from different leagues to the Premier League.”
