Patrick Vieira Departs as Genoa Head Coach
Patrick Vieira has parted ways with Genoa as head coach by mutual consent, following a challenging start to the season that has left the team at the bottom of Serie A.
Since taking charge in November 2024, Vieira has struggled to secure a league victory, with the team failing to win any matches this season.
A brief statement from the club confirmed that Vieira is no longer the first team coach.
According to a source close to Vieira, discussions about his departure began on Friday night, leading both parties to agree on the decision to part ways.
When Vieira joined, Genoa was positioned 17th in the Italian top flight. Last season, he managed to win eight matches and draw nine out of 26 games, successfully guiding the team to a 13th-place finish and ensuring their safety in the league.
This season, however, his only two victories have come in the Coppa Italia, while the team has suffered six defeats in nine Serie A matches, including five losses in the last six games.
Genoa's statement expressed gratitude towards Vieira and his staff for their dedication and professionalism, wishing them well in their future endeavors.
During his illustrious playing career, Vieira won three Premier League titles and four FA Cups with Arsenal, along with trophies from AC Milan, Inter Milan, and Manchester City. He was also instrumental in France's victories at the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000.
After retiring in 2011, Vieira began his managerial career with New York City in 2016. He later returned to Europe with Nice, where he achieved a seventh-place finish in Ligue 1 during his first season before being dismissed in December 2020.
In 2021, Vieira took over as manager of Crystal Palace, leading the team to the FA Cup semi-finals. However, he was relieved of his duties in 2023 after a 12-match winless streak. He subsequently joined RC Strasbourg following a takeover by BlueCo, the company that owns Chelsea, but left the club by mutual consent in July 2024.
