Phil Parkinson Reflects on Wrexham's Journey After Victory at Norwich
Phil Parkinson believes the football community has overlooked Wrexham's remarkable progress, as he addressed speculation regarding his future by leading the Red Dragons to a victory against Norwich City.
Reports surfaced suggesting that the club's management was in discussions about the 57-year-old manager's position. However, both Parkinson and Wrexham's non-executive director, Shaun Harvey, quickly dismissed these claims.
Following the Red Dragons' impressive comeback to secure their second Championship win of the season, Parkinson emphasized the journey the club has undertaken during his leadership. "My message to everyone in football is that four years ago we played in East Anglia — it was King's Lynn away in front of 800 spectators," he stated.
He continued, "Today, we arrived at Carrow Road to face a strong team with a top manager in front of 26,000 fans and came away with a victory. That illustrates how far we have come in such a short time, and it seems people sometimes forget that."
Harvey condemned the speculation surrounding Parkinson's role at the Stok Cae Ras (Racecourse Ground), calling it "an absolute disgrace," and affirmed that the manager enjoys the full support of the club.
Parkinson remarked that his extensive experience in football has helped him disregard external noise about his position. "First of all, I don’t pay attention to outside chatter. I’m not sure where that speculation originated, but I’ve received nothing but tremendous support from everyone here. It’s not just about me; there have been times when we faced doubts, but we emerged stronger as a group — players, staff, and owners alike," he explained.
"This is a significant result for us. We know there’s still work to be done, but I’ve managed over 1,000 games. If people think I pay attention to social media, I wouldn’t be standing here today. Engaging in that would make it challenging to continue as a manager. I focus on those I trust and who have supported me greatly at the club — today is a good day for us."
New signings Ben Sheaf, Issa Kabore, and Dom Hyam made their first starts for Wrexham at Norwich. Although Jack Stacey put the hosts ahead, Josh Windass, returning from injury, scored twice around Ryan Longman’s goal, allowing the visitors to turn the match around.
Despite Jovon Makama's late goal for the Canaries, Wrexham held on to secure a vital three points, moving up to 15th place in the Championship. Parkinson expressed satisfaction with the increased options available to him in the match against Liam Manning's team. "We’ve brought in new players, but we haven’t had enough of them on the pitch yet. We’re still working on that. Can’t people see what we’re trying to achieve from afar? I just need to focus on what we have to do," he concluded.
