Portadown Secures Impressive Victory Over Linfield
Portadown delivered a strong second-half performance to secure a convincing 2-0 victory against Irish Premiership champions Linfield at Shamrock Park.
Defender Baris Altintop opened the scoring with a header from a Steven McCullough corner just 10 minutes after the break. James Teelan extended the home side's lead with 18 minutes remaining, finishing a swift counter-attack.
This defeat means Linfield, playing their first league match in three weeks due to weather-related postponements and international call-ups, missed the opportunity to narrow the gap on the teams above them in the standings. Additionally, this victory marks Portadown's first home win over Linfield since February 2016.
Ports Achieve Significant Win
Linfield started the match strongly, earning a corner within the first 30 seconds. Kirk Millar's short corner found Ethan McGee, whose shot was blocked by Portadown goalkeeper Aaron McCarey. The experienced keeper made another crucial save against Kieran Offord, while at the other end, Ben Wylie set up Rayhaan Tulloch, whose shot was thwarted by Linfield's Chris Johns.
Linfield's captain Jamie Mulgrew was forced off early due to injury, and Portadown narrowly missed a chance when Teelan's shot, set up by Tulloch and Eamon Fyfe, was cleared off the line by Mulgrew's replacement, Josh Archer.
Offord was a constant threat in the Linfield attack, collecting a clever through ball from Millar, but his shot, although beating McCarey, went wide of the far post. Portadown had another opportunity just before halftime when Altintop's header from Fyfe's corner sailed over the crossbar.
Clear chances continued to arise after the break, with Lewis MacKinnon arriving unmarked to meet McCullough's free-kick, but he could only volley wide. The deadlock was broken in the 55th minute when Altintop powerfully headed home McCullough's in-swinging corner.
Portadown struck again in the 72nd minute with a devastating counter-attack, as Tulloch's quick break set up Teelan, who slotted the ball home. This victory brings Portadown to a total of 15 points, although they remain in the bottom half of the table due to goal difference.
