Pressure Mounts on Chelsea Manager Enzo Maresca Following Recent Defeats
The optimism surrounding Chelsea's Club World Cup victory has faded, and concerns are rising regarding manager Enzo Maresca's future.
On Saturday, Chelsea faced a disappointing 3-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge against Brighton, with the team leaving the pitch to a chorus of boos after a second consecutive match marred by a red card.
Maresca had previously experienced a high point in his tenure, having led Chelsea to win the Conference League, qualify for the Champions League, and secure the Club World Cup. However, signs of discontent are becoming evident, particularly following recent comments that may not sit well with club executives.
Following the loss to Brighton, five key figures from the Chelsea hierarchy—co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, recruitment chiefs Sam Jewell and Joe Shields, along with co-owner Behdad Eghbali—visited the dressing room. Striker Marc Guiu has not played since returning from a loan at Sunderland, while academy product Acheampong has seen limited action despite being highly regarded. In a recent press conference before the Carabao Cup match against Lincoln, Maresca commented on Liverpool's impressive form, stating, "If they continue in this way, I think it is impossible to catch them, not just for us, but for all the clubs."
This contrasts sharply with his remarks following the Brighton defeat, where he attributed costly mistakes to the inexperience of his squad. He has also indicated that decisions regarding defender Axel Disasi, who has been excluded from the first team, are beyond his control, stating, "The club didn’t mention anything, so there is not any news."
Adding to his challenges, Maresca is contending with several injury issues, with four key central defenders and star attacker Cole Palmer joining Liam Delap on the sidelines.
