PSG Begins Champions League Title Defense with Dominant Win Over Atalanta
Holders Paris St-Germain kicked off their Champions League title defense with a commanding victory against Atalanta.
After securing their first European championship with a 5-0 triumph over Inter Milan in May, PSG showcased their dominance against another Serie A team at the Parc des Princes.
Captain Marquinhos set the tone early, scoring in the third minute by side-footing in a low cross delivered by Fabian Ruiz from the left flank.
PSG created numerous opportunities, with Nuno Mendes narrowly missing the target, teenager Senny Mayulu having a shot deflected over the bar, and Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi making impressive saves to deny efforts from Bradley Barcola and Achraf Hakimi.
A second goal seemed inevitable, and it arrived in style in the 39th minute when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia executed a brilliant solo run, cutting through the defense before firing a shot from 18 yards out.
PSG manager Luis Enrique observed the first half from the stands to gain a tactical perspective, and his team had a chance to extend their lead when they were awarded a penalty after Marquinhos was fouled by Yunus Musah. However, with Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue sidelined due to injuries, Barcola stepped up to take the penalty but saw his weak shot easily saved by Carnesecchi.
Despite the missed opportunity, PSG did find their third goal just five minutes into the second half, with Mendes scoring from a tight angle past the Atalanta keeper.
Atalanta, managed by former Southampton coach Ivan Juric, struggled to challenge PSG's goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier and conceded a fourth goal in added time when Raoul Bellanova's poor backpass was intercepted by Goncalo Ramos, who finished calmly.
PSG's upcoming Champions League fixtures include away matches against Barcelona and Bayer Leverkusen in October, followed by home games against Bayern Munich and Tottenham in November.
Meanwhile, Atalanta will aim to secure a victory against Club Brugge at home in their next match on Tuesday, September 30.
