Queens Park Rangers Secure Dramatic Victory Against Birmingham City
Queens Park Rangers surged into the Championship play-off positions following a thrilling late victory over Birmingham City, marking their fourth win in five matches.
Centre-back Jimmy Dunne opened the scoring for QPR in the first half, but Birmingham's Patrick Roberts appeared to have salvaged a point with an equaliser in the third minute of stoppage time.
However, the visitors' celebrations were short-lived as QPR clinched the win in the 96th minute, thanks to a goal from teenage substitute Kieran Morgan.
This victory elevates QPR to sixth place in the standings, while Birmingham, suffering their seventh away defeat of the season, drops to 10th.
QPR dominated the match, registering 16 shots compared to Birmingham's three, and created numerous chances in the first half.
In one of the early opportunities, Dunne delivered a deep cross that was headed back across goal by Koki Saito, but Paul Smyth could only direct his header straight into the arms of Birmingham keeper James Beadle.
Just a minute later, Smyth turned provider with a cross to in-form striker Rumarn Burrell, who was seeking his ninth goal in 11 matches. Unfortunately, Burrell's shot was blocked just inside the box.
It was no surprise when QPR finally took the lead in the 39th minute, as Dunne headed in from close range after outjumping defender Phil Neumann.
Birmingham struggled to pose a threat for much of the match, having won only two of their 11 away games since their promotion to the second tier and scoring just eight goals on the road.
As they sought an equaliser, Birmingham created a couple of late chances, and Demarai Gray's impressive play down the left culminated in a flick to Roberts, who drilled home to seemingly secure a point.
Yet, QPR still had time to snatch a winner, with Morgan finishing coolly from the edge of the box into the far corner, celebrating wildly in front of the ecstatic home crowd.
The R's will face the bottom three teams in their next six matches, aiming to solidify their position in the top six, while Birmingham, having won just once in their last four, will host Charlton Athletic on Saturday.
