Rasmus Hojlund Shines as Napoli Secures First Champions League Victory
On-loan Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund made a significant impact, scoring twice as Napoli triumphed over Sporting, marking their first Champions League victory of the season.
Both of Hojlund's goals were assisted by former Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, while Colombian forward Luis Suarez netted a penalty for the Portuguese side Sporting.
The decisive goal for Napoli came in the 79th minute, following their earlier 2-0 defeat against Manchester City in their opening match of the tournament.
Hojlund joined Napoli on a season-long loan deal on transfer deadline day in early September, after not featuring in Manchester United's first four competitive matches of the 2025-26 season.
The 22-year-old forward scored 26 goals in 95 appearances during his time at Old Trafford, having transferred from Atalanta for £72 million in August 2023.
Despite scoring only four goals in the Premier League during the 2024-25 season, Hojlund has found his form at Napoli, netting three times in five games. The Italian club has an obligation to purchase the Denmark international for £38 million at the end of the season, contingent on certain conditions, including Champions League qualification.
Hojlund showcased his pace and strength with his first goal, collecting De Bruyne's through ball and finishing clinically past Sporting goalkeeper Rui Silva.
After Matteo Politano fouled Maximiliano Araujo, Sporting was awarded a penalty, which Suarez successfully converted to equalize at 1-1. However, Hojlund secured the win with a brave header from De Bruyne's cross from the left flank.
Sporting now holds a record of one win and one loss in their two Champions League matches, having started their campaign with a 4-1 victory over Kazakh side Kairat.
