Real Madrid Issues Apology Over Tribute Video Error
Real Madrid has issued an apology after mistakenly featuring a photo of the wrong footballer in a tribute video dedicated to Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva.
The video, presented during the Spanish club's ordinary general assembly, erroneously included an image of Jota alongside that of Elche and Portugal forward Andre da Silva, 30.
Diogo Jota, the Liverpool and Portugal forward, tragically lost his life in a car crash in July at the age of 28, along with his 25-year-old brother, who played professionally for Portuguese second-tier club Penafiel.
In a statement on X, Real Madrid CF expressed: "We apologize to Elche CF and its player André da Silva for mistakenly including his image in the obituary of an institutional video instead of that of André Silva, the brother of Diogo Jota, the Liverpool player."
"We regret this incident," the club added.
Elche striker Silva, who has made 53 appearances for Portugal, was a teammate of Jota at Porto and has also played for AC Milan, Eintracht Frankfurt, and RB Leipzig.
His team is set to face Real Madrid in a La Liga match on Sunday.
Earlier this month, representatives from the Madrid club, including Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dean Huijsen, and manager Xabi Alonso, paid their respects by placing a wreath in memory of Jota at Anfield prior to their Champions League match against Liverpool.
A heartfelt card from former Reds full-back Alexander-Arnold read: "My mate Diogo, you are so missed but still so loved. Yours and Andre's memory will always live on. I smile every time I think about you and will always remember the great times we shared. Miss you mate, every day. Love, Trent and family."
