Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson is optimistic as his team prepares to secure a win that will enable them to qualify for the World Cup play-offs in their upcoming qualifier against Hungary in Budapest.
A victory for the Irish at the Puskas Arena would secure them a surprising second place in Group F, a position that seemed unlikely earlier in the campaign.
The Republic's journey has been tumultuous, starting with a home draw against Hungary followed by an unexpected defeat to Armenia, which intensified pressure on Hallgrimsson. This was compounded by a last-minute loss to Portugal.
However, the Republic has bounced back, defeating Armenia at home and achieving a remarkable 2-0 victory over fifth-ranked Portugal in Dublin, with Troy Parrott scoring both goals in that match, which saw Cristiano Ronaldo sent off.
“Our focus now is to build on that victory, understanding the elements that led to our success and replicating them,” Hallgrimsson stated regarding their preparation for the crucial match. “It’s important to stop dwelling on past matches and concentrate on the task ahead.”
“We always said we would take it if we reached the final match with everything still in our hands. We embrace that responsibility now.”
The Republic will be without Evan Ferguson, who is still recovering from an ankle injury. Hallgrimsson had hoped to include the Roma striker, but Ferguson has indicated he is not fit enough to contribute.
Aside from Ferguson, Hallgrimsson has a fully fit squad to choose from, with Ryan Manning and Jayson Molumby available after serving suspensions. “I’m tempted to field the same team. Whether I will or not remains to be seen. The confidence and belief are there, and we will assess their condition in training,” he added.
“Everyone is fit except for Evan Ferguson. We spoke with him after his training session yesterday, and he hasn’t been able to practice fully. He feels he wouldn’t be able to contribute significantly. I commend him for prioritizing the team, especially after our recent win in Dublin.”
Hallgrimsson Praises Seamus Coleman
Heimir Hallgrimsson has also praised Seamus Coleman, describing him as a vital source of energy for the Republic's World Cup ambitions ahead of the match against Hungary. The 37-year-old defender was not included in the squad for the initial matches of the campaign as he fought for his place at Everton.
Despite being at an age when many of his peers have retired, Coleman showcased his commitment during stoppage time against Portugal, inspiring his teammates and setting high standards that could propel the team to next summer’s finals.
“In life and in football, there are two types of people: those who drain energy and those who provide it. Seamus is a significant source of energy for this group in many ways. The more players like him we can cultivate in Ireland, the better for our football,” Hallgrimsson remarked. “That’s the highest compliment I can give. He is the biggest source of energy I’ve encountered in my coaching career, dedicated not just to his own success but to elevating everyone around him.”
