Rio Ngumoha Makes Premier League History with Stunning Debut Goal
Sixteen-year-old Rio Ngumoha made history as the fourth youngest scorer in Premier League history, netting the winning goal for Liverpool in their thrilling 3-2 victory against Newcastle on Monday night.
Manager Arne Slot called upon Ngumoha in the 96th minute, just as Newcastle, reduced to ten men, equalized unexpectedly after trailing by two goals.
In the closing moments, Mohamed Salah delivered a low pass across the box for Dominik Szoboszlai, who let it go for Ngumoha to finish with precision on his Premier League debut.
Liverpool fans were not surprised to see Ngumoha shine on such a prominent stage, given his impressive pre-season performances, which included two goals and two assists.
After scoring the decisive goal, Ngumoha was celebrated by his teammates and jubilantly presented to the traveling supporters in Tyneside.
Interestingly, Ngumoha is not a product of Liverpool's academy; he joined the club from Chelsea's youth setup last summer. Chelsea legend John Terry remarked at the time, "This boy is and will be a top player," and it seems he was right.
'He is such an exciting prospect'
With his 17th birthday approaching later this week, Ngumoha has garnered attention during pre-season, leading fans to speculate about his role in the first team this season.
As the second-youngest player in Liverpool's history to participate in a competitive match, he started a pre-season friendly against Athletic Bilbao on the left wing, impressing with his skill and agility.
Ngumoha opened the scoring just two minutes into the match, racing forward from his own half to curl a beautiful shot from 20 yards into the net.
His dribbling and creativity caused significant problems for the La Liga side, and he left the pitch to a standing ovation midway through the second half.
Former Liverpool defender Gary Gillespie praised him on LFC TV, stating, "He is such an excellent prospect. The difficulty is managing expectations, but it’s hard to contain the excitement."
Slot acknowledged Ngumoha's continuous improvement, stating, "Rio shows something special every time he plays in pre-season." His performances included an assist against AC Milan and a goal against Yokohama F. Marinos during their Asian tour.
As a promising talent, Ngumoha will be eager for more first-team opportunities. In January, he became the youngest player to start a match for Liverpool, debuting at 16 years and 135 days during a 4-0 FA Cup victory over Accrington.
However, that was his only first-team appearance last season, and he did not make the bench for a Premier League match until this season's opener against Bournemouth.
Following the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and the departures of Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz, Slot now has a senior forward line comprising Salah, Hugo Ekitike, and Cody Gakpo. With Ngumoha's recent breakthrough, Liverpool hopes his exciting debut at Newcastle marks the beginning of a significant career.
