Romano Floriani Mussolini Shines in Serie A Debut
Romano Floriani Mussolini, the great-grandson of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, made a notable impact in his Serie A debut as he helped Cremonese secure a 3-2 victory over Sassuolo on Friday.
Floriani Mussolini entered the match with eight minutes remaining and earned a penalty that led to Manuel de Luca scoring the decisive goal for Cremonese, who now sit atop the Serie A standings with two consecutive wins.
The 22-year-old right-back, on loan from Lazio, did not play in Cremonese's previous match, a 2-1 victory against AC Milan in their season opener.
Reflecting on his debut, Floriani Mussolini expressed, "So many things happened in such a short time; I don’t think I will ever forget this night, as I have always dreamed of making my Serie A debut." He added, "My goal was to make a difference, and I’m pleased I was able to do that."
Floriani Mussolini, who wears the number 22 jersey with 'Romano' on the back, developed his skills at Lazio but did not make any top-flight appearances for the club. He spent the 2023-24 season on loan at third-division club Pescara and moved to Juve Stabia in the second division during the 2024-25 season.
After scoring a winner against Cesena last December, reports emerged that some Juve Stabia fans celebrated with fascist salutes, a claim the club has strongly denied.
Upon joining Cremonese this summer, Floriani Mussolini noted, "I am here to play football," and remarked, "My surname seems to bother others more than it bothers me."
Benito Mussolini, a historical figure of significant controversy, founded the National Fascist Party in Italy and governed the country from 1922 until his overthrow in 1943. He aligned with Adolf Hitler during World War II and was captured and executed in 1945.
