Samuel Eto'o Receives Four-Match Ban and Fine for Misconduct
Former Cameroon football star Samuel Eto'o has been suspended for four matches and fined $20,000 (£14,960) after a Confederation of African Football (CAF) disciplinary panel found him guilty of misconduct.
According to a statement from CAF, Eto'o, who currently serves as the president of the Cameroonian football federation (Fecafoot), violated the principles of sportsmanship during the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final match between Cameroon and Morocco.
The ex-Barça and Inter Milan striker reportedly exhibited frustration by making an angry gesture in response to several officiating decisions as the Indomitable Lions suffered a 2-0 defeat to the tournament hosts.
CAF president Patrice Motsepe, who was present at the match in Rabat, appeared to have observed Eto'o's discontent firsthand.
On Monday, the continental governing body announced the initiation of an investigation into "violent confrontations and unacceptable behavior of some players and officials" during the quarter-final matches.
In reaction to the ruling, Fecafoot rejected CAF's decision, stating that the process "raises serious reservations about the fundamental requirements of a fair trial."
Fecafoot expressed its support for Eto'o in a statement released on Wednesday, indicating that he intends to appeal the sanction.
Since taking office in 2021, Eto'o's reputation as a football legend has been marred by controversy and scandals. He has faced accusations of misconduct and poor management, with various football stakeholders raising concerns about significant irregularities within Fecafoot.
Despite these challenges, Eto'o has consistently denied such allegations, highlighting his accomplishments while leading the organization.
