San Diego Signs Scotland Winger Lewis Morgan from New York Red Bulls
San Diego has acquired Lewis Morgan from Major League Soccer rivals New York Red Bulls. The Scotland winger expressed that it is "tough to say goodbye" to the club where he has spent the past four seasons.
The 29-year-old, who has earned seven international caps, joined New York from Inter Miami in 2021. He is moving to a team that recently won the Western Conference for a fee that could reach up to £820,000.
Born in Greenock, Morgan is contracted through the 2026 season, with San Diego holding options to extend his contract for an additional two years.
After struggling with a knee injury and a subsequent hamstring issue, he made only three appearances this year as New York finished 10th in the Eastern Conference.
Reflecting on his time at New York, Morgan stated, "I know I can look back on my time here and know that I gave absolutely everything I had to this club. I played as if I was one of the fans and tried to bring that energy onto the pitch. Winning their supporters' player of the year in both of my healthy seasons here is something that I will cherish."
During his tenure with New York, Morgan made a total of 82 appearances, with 73 of those being starts, contributing 31 goals and 10 assists.
The former Celtic forward, who last represented Scotland in June 2024 against Finland, now joins a San Diego team that finished fourth overall in the MLS under the guidance of head coach Mikey Varas.
Sporting director Tyler Heaps commented on the signing, stating, "Lewis is an attacker who can play across the front three and brings qualities that will enhance our group in 2026. He has proven he can contribute goals and assists in this league."
