Scottish Premiership Update: Hearts Maintain Lead Amid Celtic and Rangers Resurgence
Heart of Midlothian remains unbeaten at the top of the Scottish Premiership, although they have dropped points in two of their last three matches.
In contrast, both Celtic and Rangers have secured maximum points since the appointments of Martin O'Neill and Danny Rohl, respectively. While O'Neill serves as an interim manager, both clubs have faced disappointments in European competitions. However, there are signs that their domestic performances may be improving.
Currently, Hearts hold a seven-point advantage over Celtic and a twelve-point lead over Rangers, with both Glasgow teams having a game in hand.
Goals Begin to Flow for Celtic
When O'Neill took over Celtic on a temporary basis last month, he stepped into a club grappling with internal strife, particularly following the contentious departure of Brendan Rodgers. Hearts had just defeated Celtic 3-1 at Tynecastle, allowing them to extend their lead to eight points, prompting the 73-year-old to be brought in to stabilize the team.
Despite being outplayed by Midtjylland in a recent match, O'Neill has made an immediate impact at home, winning all three of his matches, thereby narrowing the league gap and securing a place in the Premier Sports Cup final at the expense of Rangers. Under O'Neill's leadership, Celtic's attack has flourished, scoring 11 goals in these matches, a stark improvement compared to the 10 goals scored in the last seven domestic games under Rodgers, four of which came in a League Cup victory over Partick Thistle.
O'Neill expressed satisfaction with Celtic's 4-0 victory over Kilmarnock on Sunday but emphasized that significant work remains to defend their title. "There were aspects of the performance I was absolutely delighted with," he stated. "We defended strongly. You need assistance when you are chasing someone, but there's still a long way to go."
Regarding his future, O'Neill remained noncommittal, stating he is unsure if he will still be in charge at St. Mirren in two weeks. If the victory over Kilmarnock turns out to be his last match in his second stint, he will accept it. "I’ll take some time during the international break for reflection," he noted. "It’s been a whirlwind fortnight, and I can hardly believe it has happened. I genuinely don’t know if I’ll be back in two weeks. If the board makes a decision, I’m fine with that."
Rangers More Resolute Under Rohl?
Since Danny Rohl's arrival, Rangers' points tally in the Premiership has doubled. They have secured three wins in three league matches, scoring seven goals and conceding just one. The team has achieved two clean sheets on the road after previously enduring a club record run of 23 matches without one.
Following a 3-0 victory at Dundee, supporters enthusiastically chanted Rohl's name, and the 36-year-old is keen to strengthen the bond with fans. "I see a lot of togetherness more and more," he remarked. "I have great support from my staff and coaches, and the players are responsive. If we can combine this with our fans, we can build something special here."
Rangers had struggled under former manager Russell Martin, but Rohl's approach seems more pragmatic, emphasizing quick transitions into the final third and a willingness to play long balls. A determined performance at Easter Road demonstrated that Rangers can defend a lead effectively. Although they faced a semi-final defeat to Celtic in extra time, Rohl's tactical acumen allowed his team to create opportunities even while playing with ten men.
On his promising start in the league, Rohl stated, "This is significant, as is keeping clean sheets. We know our expectations are high. We want to achieve more, but it requires gradual progress. It’s important to maintain balance; while we are making strides, not everything is perfect."
No Need for Hearts to Panic
Despite seeing their lead reduced, Hearts remain unbeaten in the league and can point to solid victories against both Old Firm teams. O'Neill's two matches in charge have been at home, and tougher challenges await beyond Falkirk and Kilmarnock.
Rangers had to rely on a penalty save and a missed opportunity from Hibs to secure a narrow 1-0 victory. Additionally, both Brann and Roma exposed Rohl's defensive vulnerabilities, similar to how Midtjylland dismantled Celtic.
Hearts are set to face Aberdeen and Motherwell next, without the burden of a European fixture in between, unlike their rivals. Rangers trail Hibs on goal difference but are favorites to win their upcoming home games against promoted teams Livingston and Falkirk. Celtic's next two matches, away to St. Mirren and Hibs, present a tougher challenge. If they emerge unscathed, the title race could tighten significantly by December 7, when Hearts visit Celtic Park.
