Senegal Secures Top Spot in Group D at Africa Cup of Nations 2025
Senegal clinched the top position in Group D on goal difference after a hard-fought victory over Benin in the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 held in Tangier.
With the 2021 champions leading 1-0 and their group rivals, DR Congo, defeating Botswana 3-0, the outcome was poised to be decided by a drawing of lots. However, Habib Diallo secured Senegal's second goal from a Sadio Mane assist in the 62nd minute, allowing them to take the lead by a goal.
As the match progressed, Senegal's staff and supporters anxiously hoped that DR Congo would not score again. Their concerns were alleviated when Cherif Ndiaye converted a penalty in the 97th minute, solidifying Senegal's top spot in the group.
Benin, who had already ensured their progression before kick-off, fell behind after Abdoulaye Seck headed in Krepin Diatta's cross. The situation worsened for Benin when Kalidou Koulibaly was sent off in the 71st minute, leaving them at a numerical disadvantage.
Senegal will remain in Tangier to face either Burkina Faso or Sudan on Saturday at 16:00 GMT, with their opponents to be determined after the conclusion of Group E on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Benin will take on seven-time champions Egypt, who topped Group B, at the same time on Monday in Agadir.
