Sheffield Wednesday Players to Miss September Wages
Crisis-hit Sheffield Wednesday has informed its players that they will not receive their September wages on time, with the scheduled payday on Tuesday set to be missed.
According to BBC Radio Sheffield, the club's management has communicated this situation to the playing staff, while a decision regarding the salaries of non-playing staff is still pending.
Failure to pay players or staff could lead to further sanctions from the English Football League (EFL), which has already imposed five embargoes on the struggling Championship club, with the latest two added last Friday.
These embargoes are related to outstanding debts owed to another club for unpaid transfers and to other 'football creditors.'
If the September payday is missed, it will mark the fifth time in the last seven months that individuals associated with the club have not been compensated on time.
Sheffield Wednesday first failed to pay players' wages on time in March and May of this year, resulting in restrictions imposed by the EFL in June that prevent the club from making any transfers or loans for the next three transfer windows.
The beleaguered owner, Dejphon Chansiri, indicated during the summer that he would be open to selling the club at Hillsborough, but has yet to secure a deal with interested parties.
An American consortium that showed interest in the club has since withdrawn, leading to a fire-sale of players and the departure of highly regarded coach Danny Rohl by mutual consent.
Amid ongoing turmoil off the pitch, with fan protests occurring weekly, Wednesday has managed to win only one of its first seven league matches, currently sitting just one place above city rivals Sheffield United at the bottom of the Championship.
The club has been approached for comment.
