The North Stand at Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough stadium has been closed by the city council due to concerns regarding its structural integrity.
Earlier this month, the BBC reported that the Championship club was instructed to perform repairs after "extensive corrosion" was discovered in the stand's roof.
According to a statement from Sheffield City Council, the necessary assurances have not been provided, leading to the issuance of a prohibition notice that prevents the use of the stand by supporters.
Sheffield Wednesday's first home game of the new season is scheduled against Stoke City on Saturday, August 16.
Councillor Joe Otten, chair of the environmental services and regulation policy committee at Sheffield City Council, stated, "We are regrettably in a position where we must issue a notice prohibiting spectators in the North Stand until we can be absolutely assured that the required work has been undertaken to the satisfaction of the council as certifying authority."
"This decision follows an assessment by engineering specialists who can no longer confirm the North Stand is safe for spectator use," he added.
"We recognize that this is a very difficult situation, and we will continue to work closely with the club, providing support and guidance where possible."
"We, like everyone, want to see fans enjoying football at Sheffield Wednesday in the coming season."
This development is the latest in a series of challenges for the club during a tumultuous summer.
The club has faced several embargoes due to financial difficulties, including delayed wage payments in May and June, and manager Danny Rohl departed by mutual consent on Tuesday.
